Recommended Posts

Im wondering to buy a new fountain pen. I love big pens and my choice is between Montblanc 149 and Pelikan M1000. I quite confused about them. Seems that Montblanc is bigger than pelikan and Pelikan's nibs are more flexible than Montblanc. Can anyone share his knowledge with meregarding both founatin pens ??

I will be so pleased with some help.

Thanks

.....Pelikan's nibs are more flexible than Montblanc. .....

It's more like "springiness" than flex. I had both; sold both and then re-bought few MB 149. Pelikan is a bit heavy but not uncomfortable for a couple of pages of writing at a time (can be subjective), both hold good quantity of ink. Pelikan has choice in colors of barrel. Either should make you happy.

That is a fantastic comparison, Hari!

Torotos, I have owned both and prefer the 149 to the M1000. However, you will need to try both out yourself.

Easy choice - 149

Better ergonomics. The Pel 1000 is too uniformly long so felt off balance weighted to the back end of the pen.

Pel 1000s past fine nibs often have excessive flow.

Pel nib QC has been bad, including their xf nibs which is why Pel has reportedly brought nib production back in house.

Mb Broad and wider nibs have a stubbish profile unlike Pels which have round tipping, so lack line variation.

Personally I much prefer the cleaner classical Meisterstuck styling.

I have given away all my Pelikans.

I suggest the 149: the pen is very ergonomic (I completely agree with Bladerunner's comment).

MB Service is second to none.

If you like pens that are large;

1. Sailor king of pen. c/c only but available in a variety of finishes and the 149 equivalent from sailor.

2. Danitrio - the large eyedropper models. I'm not familiar with them but see lovely reviews and pictures on the forum.

In a MB forum, I'm going to suggest the MB149 for all the reasons in the previous posts. The vintage nibs are springier and supposedly have more flex than the current models. Otherwise, the 149 is and always will be a fantastic pen by which others are compared, not the other way around.

In Rotation: Parker DuoFold Centennial / Duofold / GvFC

In storage: Too many to name.

I love Pelikan even though I would get a MB anyday of the week over Pelikan but I'm a MB guy.

Personally I find the Pelikan M600 to be best fit to my hands while MB 149 and MB 146 fit my hands well too.

Not sure if this would help you but I if forced to chooce I would go for the 149 but I would much rather have both.

Respect to all

Have both and like both but neither makes it into regular rotation, just too many pens I like even more than either.

The Pelikan has a longer and more tapered section, the 149 section is shorter with almost no taper. I find the Pelikan since it is slightly longer easier to use unposted, the 149 easier to use posted. I think over all the Pelikan is a prettier pen than the 149 and the 149 more iconic. Of my pens in the general Pelikan 10xx and 149 size range, my ST Dupont large Montparnasse gets the most pocket time, then it is likely one of my Sheaffer PFMs, then likely an OMAS 360.

Both great pens and the margin between them is fine. I have owned both and lean towards the 149.

Will I get another 149 sometime in the future? Without doubt.

Will I get another M1000? No. Great pen as said before but the 149 has more about it.

Probably not the best place to post a comparison thread. You'd have to imagine that more people in this forum would like the 149.

Thank you very much for all the info.

Actually I'm less confused than before.

I'll post the final result.

Thank very much to all of you !!!

Just another quick note about pen sizes: One has to be careful because the size of the pen closed is the least important measurement. What's important - in terms of writing comfort - is the girth and either the length of the pen uncapped or the length of the pen posted, depending on whether one likes to post or not. Nib length is also important.

One example of how capped length can be misleading is in the modern Aurora 88 vs 149 comparison: Capped, the 149 is over 1 cm longer than the 88, but uncapped, they are identical in overall length, but the 149 is fatter and has a longer nib, and is therefore more comfortable.. for me!

Interesting thread. I've only used the Pelikan M1000 so I can't speak to the relative feel of the Pelikan versus the MB 149. However, I'd differ with some of the posters regarding the feel, flow, and nib quality of the M1000. My medium nib does have a very nice stub quality too it in addition to the springiness that gives writing a lovely flair. I can use my broad for general writing. It IS wet but well controlled and not excessively wet.

I've heard only positive comments on Pelikan M1000 quality from other owners. It seems to be, essentially, the standard against which other brands are compared.

Why haven't I purchased a Mont Blanc? Several reasons but one of the primary ones was a long discussion I had with the owner of one of the more well-known brick & mortar pen stores. His testimony was that over the years he has gotten more MBs back for adjustment and correction (proportionate to sales) than any other premium brand. For this reason, if asked, he discretely switches customers to other pens - including the Pelikan. He's also had difficulty as a dealer with MB warranty support. That is just one dealer's opinion, but he's been in the business for 30 years.

I have both 149 (EF,F,M,B) and m1000 (EF, F). Comparing both EF nibs, 149 writes thinner vertical lines than horizontal lines and m1000 is stubbish. As for the fine nibs, my 149 doesn't really show any line width variation but m1000 still feels more like a stub nib.

M1000's nib is springier than 149 and for me I can't write fast with M1000 because I feel like I have no control over the nib but the feel on the M1000 nib is great when I write slower. It is easier to clean the m1000 because you can take the nib out.

I can't say one is better than the other although 149 costs more. I enjoyed both of them and use them regularly.

PatientType, julian,

Wow, never heard of any factory Pelikan nibs Medium or finer writing like stubs! What year production? Are they very new or vintage perhaps? I've heard of some vintage Pel broads that write stubbish, but not modern. Writing samples please.

If this is a standard characteristic of factory Pelikans, I'll try them again, but all of the modern Pels I've tried from F to B have all had round tips with no line variation.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
