Im thinking of buying my first MB 149 but dont know which era's are good and not so good - ealy/late 1960, 80s etc. I have heard about some barrels being suceptible to cracking and breaking - which era is most likely to have suffered this? Is there any real difference between 149s across the decades?

You can read Barry Gabay's article thats pinned on this forum, it describes the changes throughout the decades. there is also a pole on this forum a week ago that asked this question. I personally have a mid-late 80's and i have no probs with it at all. It has the benefit of an ebonite feed

I personally prefer the tri color 14C nibs from the 60's early 70's. My favorite 149 is my totally rebuilt (modern 149 from the boutique) with the vintage 14C fine nib from the 60's ( the only thing left from the original pen). For me the nibs from that era write a bit softer than the modern ones.

Oh yes, 149s are much much different today than they were 60 years. There can be no comparison of a vintage celluloid 149 and a 2009 resin 149.

I prefer 1950s celluloid 149s and first generation (early 60s) resin 149s over modern 149s. The nibs on these are fantastic as Adrian mentions.

I seriously suspect that my opinion would change if I were to ever try a celluloid 1950's 149. :cloud9: Someday hopefully I'll be lucky enough to acquire one.

early 60's to the early 80's 149s are my favorite. The nibs and the pistons make the whole difference.
