Cheap Mont Blanc fountain pens?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

After using my first fountain pen (a pilot varsity) a few months ago, I have fallen in love with the fountain pen. Having purchased a lamy al-star I feel that I am ready to move on to something classier. My question is if there are quality fountain pens for under 50 Gbp (2nd hand obviously), if I could get a mont blanc for this price, it would be a dream come true.

Thanks

I hate to say it, but given the price new I think it might be a little implausible to find a MB for that price. There are, of course, other very nice pens available second hand that might come a little closer to your budget.

*edit* I stand corrected! Good luck with your search!

If you specifically want Montblanc, look for one of the 1x, 2x or 3x series from the late 50's to mid 60s, the 12x, 22x or 32x series form the mid 60s into the early 70s, the student pens like the MonteRosa and Carrera, the SlimLine or Noblesse or the early Classics.

Ok thanks, it appears there arn't that many bargains to be found ... It seems, however that chopin/mozart special editions are cheaper. Why?

There are plenty of bargains out there, I think unfortunately with the price you mention that you are after a steal.

My advise would be to monitor email and occasionally you will get a deal. I pay well under £100 for my MB Traveller a few years back. If you wait for a bit, hopefully you will also be able to save a bit more cash and have more chance of getting a MB.

My Collection: Montblanc Writers Edition: Hemingway, Christie, Wilde, Voltaire, Dumas, Dostoevsky, Poe, Proust, Schiller, Dickens, Fitzgerald (set), Verne, Kafka, Cervantes, Woolf, Faulkner, Shaw, Mann, Twain, Collodi, Swift, Balzac, Defoe, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Saint-Exupery, Homer & Kipling. Montblanc Einstein (3,000) FP. Montblanc Heritage 1912 Resin FP. Montblanc Starwalker Resin: FP/BP/MP. Montblanc Traveller FP.

I think that is perhaps the problem, a few years ago... What I find frustrating about ebay is you watch this item for 7 days and you think its just your moment and someone else just outbids you into oblivion. I suppose that patience is key, do you think that for my budget it is rather difficult to get a Mont Blanc? :D

Oh and for 60$ or so you can get a MB SL or VIP. simple and yet good writers.

I think I need to reconsider pen choice, it doesn't seem likely that there are many cheap Mont Blancs...

There are lots of vintage MB pens for good prices. Like everyone has said, just be patient. They pop up every once in a while.

I'm not sure how flexible you are but here's one that's just double the price you are looking for.

Unfortunately that is quite a bit over what I want to pay, I've spotted a Mont Blanc Chopin edition fountain pen for 70 pounds which seems about right, is it a good deal?

EDIT: My bad its starting bid... I guess I will have to be more patient:D.

I am reminded of the saying that seems very fitting for Montblanc fountain pens: "Cheap fountain pens aren't good and good fountain pens aren't cheap".

I first saw that at a tattoo shop.

Good luck

Patience is indeed the key. The past few I've bought (over a period of about six months) on eBay have been:

Celluloid 144: £65

121: £35

1990s 146 (bent nib): £55

12: £30

31: £25

I also bought a 146 and a 147 for £75 each out of the local paper, sold the 147 for £150 and basically got a free 146!

I'd agree with other posters that the sixties and seventies pens are very enjoyable to own - the 12/121 is my personal favourite.

You ae very lucky indeed! according to your experiences I could even get a mb 149 for £50. I guess patience really is the key on eBay.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
