I, being unable to tell reals from fakes, am interested on how you can tell this is a fake.

If it wasn't for the price, I probably wouldn't have looked closely enough to spot that it is a fake. Two things: the resin the star sits in isn't flush with the metal (see pictures), and the engraving in the cap's middle band is off.

If you look at the history he has sold quite a few of them, some pushing $400.00.

On item 170433261045, the nib looks very fake.

Also zoom in on the serial numbers from the past and present auctions...they appear to be the same number. I can't tell for sure, but the models usually differ somewhat, or that has always been my impression. Maybe someone can verify this.

What's sad is that we complain about eBay, and yet I saw fakes being represented as genuine on tables at the Philly pen show.

We really need to clean up our own house.

Rant over.

The clip does not look quite right, specifically, the immediate angle area of the clip as it curve out from the cap. Also the resin star not flushed as mentioned. Lastly, the font in the serial number "7" does not look right. the angle on the top right of 7 should be more right-angled before it start to curve, as this is the case for me and some pics I see online, the fake '7' has an inital angle less than 90 degree and did not end vertically. just my thoughts... pretty sure it is fake, but my reasoning can be wrong.

The problem is that as optics, cad/cam and automation increase and become less and less expensive, the fakes will look more and more like the real ones. It will be harder and harder to identify the fakes by visual clues, the differences will be in things like the quality of the materials, internal fit and finish and the handcrafted features like nib tuning and testing.

We will be living in interesting times.

The snow-cap star is too large relative to the cap crown's dome. Those who recognized the fake by its nib, please elaborate some more. The nib really does look authentic to me. Usually, the nib is the first give away. Please explain about this particular nib. Maybe the resolution on my screen isn't powerful enough to tell the fake by the nib. Thanks in advance.

It's a lot easier to see on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170433261045#ht_500wt_1041

The nibs are virtually identical. As you know, MB nibs are stamped, and have a deep impression in the metal. The ones in these fakes are engraved, and not deep at all. It's too bad that the people who are buying these actually think they're getting the real thing.

The engraving error on that "C" is enough to damn it in my eyes. Of course a $76 current bid invites a closer look, as you said.

Fake

Besides the obvious things already mentioned I would like to add that the pattern of the pen was never offered by MB with a gold trim.

The fake's pattern tries to look like the Pure Silver but that one only came woth silve trim.

The Barley Corn finish (which originally comes with gold trim) does not have the smooth areas interupting the engraved lines except for th indicia on the cap.

Also on a gold trim 144 Classique the section ring should be gold as well.

In addition to that I'm always suspecting a fake if the tipping on a solid gold nib is golden too (which indicates gold plating after tipping in most cases) ... with very few exceptions.

All solid MB nibs I have cleary show silver colored tipping material.

Cheers

Michael

What happened to those sellers? Were they ejected from the show?

No. I suspect the show promoters are afraid to offend those who pay to play.

Sorry that I hijacked the thread. I am moving the issue I raised to the Writing Instruments forum.

Im not so sure, to me when i look at the feed it looks misaligned to me? normally thats a dead give away of a fake. But i admit that these fakes are getting too good.

I wonder if we are even safe buying here on the forum, this has put me in a lot of doubt

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
