Discontinued Rotring Ink

Here is my take on how the bottle set discussed here meshes with the Rotring cartridges available in the 1996 catalogue:

I'm using the Brillant Turquoise from a rehydrated 90s cartridge right now in one of my Esprits with an M and in my opinion it's a fantastic vibrant shade with a slight green tone.

Dakota Black, Brillant Black R598312

Florence Rose, Brillant Pink R598202

Shannon Green, Brillant Green R598211

Persian Red, either Brillant Red R598210, or Brillant Brick Red R598206

Sevilla Red, either Brillant Red R598210, or Brillant Brick Red R598206

Sienna Brown, Brillant Brown R598207

Saxon Blue, either Brillant Ultramarine R598213, or Brillant Royal Blue R598205

Paris Blue either Brillant Ultramarine R598213, or Brillant Royal Blue R598205

Jakarta Violet, Brillant Violet R598204

Carlsbad Turquoise, Brillant Turquoise R598203

Cheers, Anthony.

An update as I ran across a conversation where it was stated as follows:

Saxon Blue, Brillant Ultramarine R598213,

Paris Blue, Brillant Royal Blue R598205

So there is a probable match between these cartridge colors and the display set colors -- at least anecdotally, no official citation from Rotring references.

The burning question in my mind is who made the Rotring fountain pen inks? I'm convinced they did not manufacture them, but contracted that out to another company, Pelikan perhaps as there are similarities in color selection. A theory, nothing more. I expect we'll never know. I do have a contact in Germany that worked at the Rotring factory for 40 years. He only speaks German so I have to rely on Google Translate to converse, and that takes some care. Next time I''m in contact I'll ask him if he knows anything about Rotring ink, and whether he has access to any NOS.

For anyone else that reads this -- I'm missing only one color in my Rotring Brillant ink cartridge collection: Rotring green. I would be willing to trade a NOS Rotring Turquoise (or other color) for a single box with six green cartridges. Doesn't matter if they are bone dry, as rehydration with distilled water and a syringe brings them back to life perfectly. I admit I am an OCD completionist!

Interesting related article:

http://newpentrace.net/penbase/Data_Returns/full_articlebc80.html?id=389 -- I did purchase a 1 oz bottle of Pelikan green (not dark green) to serve me until I can locate Rotring green which is mentioned in this article as being more intense.

Cheers, Anthony.

Ok, Since my twin 2 year olds are asleep, I was able to get a scan of the inks so you all can get a look at them. If you have heard of them or have used them, your opinions are welcome. If you think my printing is bad, you should see my handwriting!!!

I realize I'm dreaming in technicolor and operating a virtual time machine-- but do you still have the file rotring4bq.jpg lurking in your archives? I'm looking for examples of Rotring colors to help me with my research as I try to compile a complete set of Rotring ink examples.

Cheers, Anthony.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
