Manufacturers since 1864, Diamine Inks relocated to this purpose built 'state of the art' factory in Liverpool in 1925, where they successfully carried on using the traditional methods and formulas for ink production. Over the years the company has changed hands and are now located close to the world famous Aintree Race Course

Diamine offers interesting ink gift sets. The idea is nice but I'm not interested in full lines of inks, rather in colors I enjoy. That's why I'm pleased to say Diamine will offer all of their inks also in 30 ml plastic bottles. A friend of mine send me the samples of Music Set inks. I'll review them here.

Beethoven isn't bad but

  1. There are some many more interesting greens on the market
  2. It has the weakest flow in the set

The green and blue markets are so tough - there are so many contenders. I like Beethoven fine, but not more than the normal Diamine line, and that isn't even considering the hundreds of other greens. It's been a pleasant ink, and well-behaved, and it isn't THAT expensive.

Indeed as I'd rather buy individual bottles than complete sets as I'm mostly a fan of blue and blue-black inks.

I've enjoyed my sets, and I'm glad I bought them all, but my tastes tend to migrate back and forth on colors. (Except for a few shades.) Particularly for the flower inks, there's a few in there I probably wouldn't have picked up on my own that I really like. But I'm glad there's options for everyone else, too.

I bought most of the colors of the Music set and took sample of the rest. This is the kind of green I find very common... so, I am quite glad I did not bought a full bottle of it. :P

I like murky greens... complicated greens.. (First row of the ink comparison above, are all my kind of green... )

Yeah, there's more colors in the Music set that are fine, but I just don't have strong feelings about. I can't even recall the names most of the time. Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven are all solidly in the "gee, that is a completely well-behaved and nice ink, like a bunch of other green/blue/brown inks". Which . . . I feel is probably unfair to them? And yet. (Strauss at least has the benefit of being interesting, even if it's not a color I find myself using.)

Greens are tough for me. I generally like green, but I am really picky about greens in a way that I'm not about most other hues. I prefer murky yellow-leaning greens, but I like deep forest greens too. But a touch too much blue, and I hate them. Especially bright blue-leaning greens. And then at some magic point, we hit teal. I love teal. Can't get enough teal. There's just one band of green hues that is completely unacceptable, and I have no idea why.

I understand completely... I feel exactly the same way... (teal included). I believe Vis will join us.. until we hit the teal, then he will jump out of the bandwagon..

This is *exactly* how I feel about green inks too. But for some reason Beethoven does appeal to me. It's just the right side of "too much blue".

I like very much the silhouette of Beethoven you did (2nd image down from the William Blake quote). Well done!

I had a sample of this ink and liked it quite a bit. While it is a pretty standard dark green the shading is quite impressive.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
