"pix" what does it mean?

I just received a new 149 and noticed the pix on the cap band. I've seen it refered to before but didn't realize that it was on the band. What does it mean? My other 149's don't have it, but they're older.

Thanks

Dear Wael,

the term PIX was started in 1934 to denote the push button propelling pencils. Subsequently, when 4-colour leads and later 4 colour refills for ballpoints were introduced they were called Pix O Mat.

I find the PIX text rather misleading when dating pens. In pens of a certain era, eg.90s to present (determined by accompanied dated MB receipts), I have seen PIX on the cap band and under the clip. Also pens with no PIX text. In some older models of 146 (50s) there is a XX under the clip - if anyone knows what this means please share.

The only conclusion I can come to is parts from different eras are still available at MB and are being used to put pens together. In a recent conversation with the local technican about repairing a Leonard Bernstein (prod. 1996) he mentioned parts are still available so there could quite be other parts lurking in the MB factory.

Stay well,

Solomon

Hello Wael,

PIX ist a registered trademark, Montblanc is the trademark holder.

UG30 - Verfahren (Chronologie)

Anmeldetag: 31.08.1937 ( date of declaration)

Tag der Eintragung: 19.01.1939 ( date of record )

Tag der Veröffentlichung der Eintragung: 31.12.1952 ( Date of relaese the record ) , you see; It takes a long time from the declaration to the release. Okay, between this period was a very bad time for the world.

Informations like this are available on the website of the German patent office. Montblanc is still the trademark holder of "PIX". It shows, additional to the other marks, that this a original Montblanc product.

regards

Thanks for the responses and information. Not sure if this means anything, but the 149 "pix" cap doesn't screw on a non pix 149 pen. They seem to have the same thread, but different pitch. Is that just a coincidence?

cheers

When you say 'doesn't screw', does the cap go round and round like on a stripped thread or is the seating off?

Your question intrigued me so I interchanged the caps on my 149s (unfortunately I didn't have a pix on clip model on hand, but tried the swaps on pix under clip and no pix models).

As I was meeting a seller of a 90s 149 for lunch, tried my caps on his pen as well. Next, tried my caps on a few new 149s as well as interchanged new caps with new models at the MB boutique (a stone's throw from my office). Told them I was checking some issues on my pens and when you walk in with 5 149s they pretty much let you have your way :roflmho: .

My hands on conclusion, not all caps fit exactly on all pens, regardless of age. On most pens the interchanged caps fit perfectly. On 1 new model I found an older cap fit but with only 2 turns. 1 new cap fit on an older model but the barrel went deeper into the cap but with the requisite 3 turns if cap and body are matched. Even amongst the new models, 2 exchanged caps fit but the last turn was tight with no bite as if the threading had run out - with their own caps it was not a problem.

Hopefully this helps. I am going to try the process again when I can get my hands on a thread gauge - the engineer in me is getting fidgety.

Solomon,

I meant that the caps were not interchangeable at all. Neither would catch on the threads. Sounds like your trial net different results so far. I am very interested to know what you find.

My Hemingway cap and my non-pix cap are interchangeable. Neither would catch at all on the pix pen.

cheers

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
