Caran d'Ache Ecridor Retro or Dunas model pen?

RashidD

Recommended Posts

I am pretty new to fountain pens and would like to know which one of these to go for.

Has anyone used them?

Is the price difference justified in terms of usability, or is it just for the look?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Greetings, RashidD! :W2FPN: Since you have some idea of your preferences, your best bet would be to go to a "brick and mortar" (B&M) store and try them out, to see which one fits your writing style.

Until you hold a pen in your hand, it's all theoretical.

The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it.

Thanks for the warm welcome Robert! Hope i can contribute in a more beneficial way as time passes on...

I can only hold the dunas one, as our agents here don't have the retro in stock unfortunately. I can try to ask my friend to bring one down from abroad though...

Can you recommend anything else on the writing performance of both of these?

Also, although i am interested in a fountain pen, our agents do have an Ecridor Eclat in stock which looks beautiful. What can you recommend regarding these... Are they a collector's edition or limited amount of pieces?

The nibs are the same between the two. The Dunas is a 'plastic' body pen whereas the Ecridor is a 'metal' brass body. The Ecridor being metal is is heavier while being smaller in diameter - approx the same as a #2 pencil.

I have a couple of both (different colours or patterns) and find them to be reliable writers.

Not sure who does the nibs (or if inhouse for that matter), but never had a bad one yet. Seems the nibs are the same for most of the Caran d'Ache line Dunas, Ecridor, Varius. Excellent workmanship.

The Caran d'Ache Ecridor was one of my first "nice" pens. I received it as a gift 2 years ago and wrote a review of it before really knowing much about fountain pens:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=30054

Two years later, I still love this pen and use it all the time. Scroll to the end of the review thread to see some newer, updated comments.

My only caution about this pen, is that it is very thin and at the same time somewhat heavy -- which is a problem for some people.

Good luck!

Hello RashidD,

Once I had Dumas, but really can't say anything good about the pen. The nib was skipping and the pen in the whole wasn't to ergonomic.

It's a low end pen, and, it seems to me, not a very good one.

regards,

adam

I have an ecridor type 55 which is very nice to write with. I have had it for about 6mths, and it is very smooth. I find it to be quite light, and maybe even a little too small now, but i have big hands, and only recently discovered large sized pens. Below is a comparison image of my type 55, with a YOL victorian viceroy grande, and a pelikan m215

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
