Free Pens to Students & New FPNers

Hi folks,

I've been very fortunate in being able to engage in this hobby for several years now -- and most especially these days, given the woeful state of the economy. So I'm offering these pens to students and to relatively new members of FPN. (This is going to be on an honor system; no one will be asked to prove student status, nor will I check how long you've been an FPN member or lurker.)

Most of these pens were acquired in my first year of collecting, so you won't find any fancy Italian celluloid or Japanese Urushi -- but each one should serve its new owner well. I'll pay for all reasonable shipping costs; I'm in the US and I'll ship anywhere so long as it doesn't cost the other half of my retirement plan.

Below is a quick-list of the pens. A more detailed list, with descriptions and photos can be found here. The list is hosted off-site so that I can easily edit/update the page to indicate which pens are still available; editing-time restrictions here on FPN prohibits me from updating this post after 24-hours.

Send an email to girlieg33k [ at ] gmail.com to indicate which pens, by number, you'd like to own. Feel free to claim more than one pen -- but please also give others a reasonable chance to claim pens, i.e., don't send me an email asking for all of them. :)

Posting in this thread to claim a pen will help others know which pens might still be available -- but posting here cannot guarantee that the pen is still available. An email, first in time, gets a pen; please wait for confirmation by reply email. Also, it may take me a few hours, or even a day (or two) for me to reply to all emails. (I, fortunately, still have a day-job, but I'll reply to all emails as soon as I can.)

In case you missed it above, click here to view full descriptions and photos of the pens.

Dear girlieq33k,

Wow! You are amazingly generous.

I don't know if I am new enough (I've posted a few times), but I definitely am a beginner, relearning how to write with a fountain pen.

Both the calligraphy pen and the Sailor milky float (any color) interest me. Please put me at the end of the line and, if the pens are not claimed, remember that I was interested.

Thanks, Mark

Updated: All pens have been claimed.

Mark, someone else claimed the Reform calligraphy pen, by email, before your post appeared in the thread. The Sailor in green has been reserved for you, however; you'll need to provide your mailing address by email.

Thanks, everyone!

Wow, that's very generous of you girlieg33k.

Had I seen it in time I'd have probably tried to sign up for some classes right away in order to qualify. Having missed it I'll just take solace in my untutoredness ;) .

Indeed a very kind gesture of you. I did something similar with a couple of user grade pens I couldn't sell on Pentrace a couple of years ago and the free pens were claimed literally within seconds. No one turns down that generous of a deal. Amazing how they come out of the wood work when the pens are free. Kudos to you

Hi,

A generous offer and it's really nice to have you back, I for one have missed your ink reviews especially the handwritten ink ones and hopefully we will now see more.

Sure all the others have missed you too, welcome back.

Final Update: All pens have shipped.* Emails have been sent to everyone with tracking information. If you did not receive an email with tracking information, contact me by email.

One last thing, another thread titled Pay it Forward 2009 has sprung up, and I'm pleased that this has spurred generosity. However, I confess to being a bit embarrassed that the topic was attributed to me. The very existence of FPN epitomizes generosity, and lots of members, before I came on to the scene, have given to the hobby and to other members. I merely followed their own example.

K.

P.S. The idea of a separate section for "Free Items" is great. Thanks to everyone who chimed in, and to Col for managing the madness. :)

*Exception: Sailor Green to Mark Cummins (above). Please provide a mailing address (to the email address in the original post).

Quite a healthy sort of madness, though! And though you weren't the first, I don't recall anyone else inspiring the members in quite the way that you seem to have done. (I thought I might as well embarrass you some more. :D)

Btw, a pinned topic is proposed at this stage, rather than separate sub-forum. And I'm busy breaking the guidelines by discussing it in For Sale topic!

Dear Girlieq,

My pen arrived yesterday. Very cute--so cute that my wife slyly said "oh, that's too small for your hand. It's more my size." I riposted (sorry) that when I posted the pen it fit well, but the handwriting is on the wall! So, we thank you.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
