The senses: smell

I've noticed that when I write with my Private Reserve Black Magic Blue I tend to catch wafts of the smell of the ink. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, and if they do, which inks smell the best/worst?

Many of my inks have scents. With the exception of the two J Herbin bottles, none of mine were meant to smell good, but I like their smell anyway. Favorite ink smell so far is umm... Noodler's. I think. I don't remember the scents real well when I'm not using/smelling them.

I don't know who makes it, but there is a boutique brand available around where I live in art stores and some of the old general stores. The reds(3 shades) all smell like roses. The blues( blue and blue/black) smell like violets. The black smells like licorice. They smell DELICIOUS.

As for the worst, I would say real, old fashioned india ink stinks to high heaven.

That may be just me though.

The "boutique brand" is probably Montblanc, I know they have a lot of special edition scented inks, especially around the holidays. Don't know what that does to your pen, though...

I've never noticed ink smells; I'll have to go check. The only smell I know for ink is the smell that my ink for Japanese calligraphy has.

It's definately not MB ink. They like to prominantly plaster their trademark all over things that they make. This comes in (seemingly) whatever bottles are available to the maker at the time. I've yet to see it in the same bottle twice. I have an empty around here somewhere. When it surfaces, I'll have a look at the label and post the name.

I loved the smell of the former Waterman Blue Black. Nowadays something changed, it doesn't smell like ink any more.

Funny, the first thing I did with my ink was smell it (Noodler's Black)

I did that with my second bottle too... (Lex Gray)

the black smells better...

I can definitely smell most of my inks. I particularly like the smell of Noodler's Fox Red, lately... maybe because I've been grading with it a lot.

Sailor inks smell bad - but I love them.

My J Herbin Eclat de Saphir smells wonderful.

This topic comes up quite a bit in Inky Thoughts" forum. You might enjoy to search there for "smell", "scent", "aroma", "bouquet", ...

Personally I have a nostalgia for the (phenolic?) smell of old Sheaffer Skrip Deluxe Blue. My Private Reserve Midnight Blues smells positively obscene, don't know if it's just this bottle or what...

I swear that PR Ebony Purple smells a little like artificial grape flavor.

I've noticed that when I write with my Private Reserve Black Magic Blue I tend to catch wafts of the smell of the ink. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, and if they do, which inks smell the best/worst?

I was making a test mixture with this ink just yesterday, and I noticed that it did indeed have an odor. What I was mixing was an 8:1 = P.R. Midnight blues : Noodler's Legal Lapis mixture, part of my sacred quest.

It has an odor to it. I'm not sure what it's similar to though. Women have a superior olfactory sense to men. This explains why men's rooms can get so redolent and we men don't really care while women complain about the stink from half a block away.

The Noodler's inks have a variety of odors, the older ones smelling different from the more recent ones.

Worst stinky ink ever: Hero 234. Smells awful  ! Smells like burning rubber or something.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

I love the smell of ink! Never had an ink I didn't like to sniff.

Hero Ink doesn't smell nasty, not sure if I have 234 though. The blue, red and black I have all smell too strong, like flowers. Really strong flower smell. Headache inducing in some folks I imagine.

My favorite is Omas Blue- lovely odor. Sometimes, you can find me with a tiny dot of the stuff at the end of my nose- the smell is distinctive enough to smell it off of the nib, and I'll use the smell of the nib to tell (before writing with the pen) if I inked it with Omas Blue or another blue. :P

The other Hero inks aren't like the 234. It's carbon particle ink. I just sniffed the Hero Blue/Black ink that I have and it has a sort of solvent-y odor to it, not terrible at all. But the hero 234 has an odor that triggered a reflex in me that said, "This stuff is bad! Get away from it!" It doesn't just smell awful it smells dangerous.

I fear that my sense of smell is dreadful. I can't smell the Herbin scented inks as scents - I can tell that there is something there, but the scent isn't strong enough for me to tell what it is. The only one I can smell is Noodler's Baystate Blue, and I find it gives me a headache after a few hours.

Regards

Richard.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
