Help identifying a MB 149

Hallo,

I've just found an old MB 149, but I can't understand if it's original or if it's a fake, and the period when this pen was made.

First of all, the nib has just one color and one material (gold) without platinum. Over the nib is written 14C, Montblanc, 585.

I've read the article at http://www.pentrace.net/penbase/Data_Retur...=405&cname= (thanks to this forum), and I've seen that the pen with just GERMANY over the top cap ring are approximately of 60's and 70's period.

I haven't found a serial number over the pen, but the booklet and the international warranty certificate card seems original.

Here are two photo of the boxset and of the pen.

Hope anyone could help me.

Kind regards,

C.

I believe that it's original. There is a 149 on fountainpen.de (http://www.fountainpen.de/old-80er-149-vollgoldfeder.htm) that has a mono-color nib. I've got a 149 with a mono-color nib also, but I suspect the reason the platinum has worn off of mine is from excessive polishing by the previous owner.

The packaging of your pen dates to the late 80s/early 90s IIRC.

Can you post a photo of the nib?

Eric

Thank you very much for your answers.

The nib is exactly the same shown at the link you suggested me.

What is the value for this pen in your opinion, or where may I find quotations for this kind of pen?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

C.

The description of your suspect pen sounds fine. I also believe it's an authentic 149. As for the link to the all-yellow gold 149 nib, I agree with niksch that the nib looks heavily polished. I had a similar nib with about 90% of its platinum worn off. The nib in the photo, I believe, is an earlier nib than the barrel collar in which it is set, unless it is a transitional early-80s model.

It looks like a 144 to me. Could be an early one as I do believe that MB did put single tone gold nibs on 144s.

Thanks Eric, but any clue on it being genuine or fake. :)

I don't know. Since this was originally a 149 post, why don't you post a new topic about your pen. You'll likely get more traffic.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Why, in your opinion, there isn't a serial number on that pen? I think that with the serial number the answer to my question will be more comfortable :P

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

I know you asked this question to Barry, but... There is no serial number on your pen because it was produced before MB began putting serial numbers on the clips. They began using serial numbers in the early/mid-90s.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
