OK, give it to me straight, my friends.

Which is the best notebook to handle a wet writing Pelikan M215 Stub (8 on the Binder Scale).

And which is the best writing paper.

I know that the people reading this will have the answer, and believe me, I'm open to suggestions!

If there is a way you can get Nightingale's Handbook.

It will take all the gushers you have including spilled ink.

Can anyone offer some guidance on Original Crown Mill? There's a great review here. Any other experiences, positive or negative?

Japanese paper (e.g., Maruman, Kokuyo) is the best. It's also the cheapest of the good papers. After that, i'd say Rhodia.

Okay, you asked for it (my opinion). ;)

I don't like Clairfontaine because it is too glossy (glassy) and bleeds too much.

Moleskine is less glossy and bleeds less. That's probably why it costs more.

I would go with rhodia! It makes all my pens less-broad but still handles the ink fine. Unlike clairfontaine which doesn't seem to actually like ink so it can take forever to "dry".

Rhodia or Black n' Red. Clairefontaine is lovely but for a gusher I'd expect some drying time issues. I've never noticed bleeding with it - may depend on which particular notepad. Rhodia & BnR OTOH are smooth but just rough enough to quickly absorb most inks very nicely without feathering.

I LOVE Apica but they're not so readily available and like Clairefontaine the slickness might be an issue with a very wet nib - though I've yet to experience that. I find some of the other cheaper Japanese papers to be a bit too thin for some of my wet nibs/dark inks. But Apica has handled them well thus far - wet writer with Black Magic Blue, several Diamine inks, and FPN inks in a range of nibs.

I don't know what to think of Moleskine but have heard far too many complaints of inconsistency to spend the money on it.

as far as single sheet paper. The only one that I can find easily and like for the $ is HP 32lb Premium paper. It does have the occasional spot where it feathers a bit. And it's very heavy. Several of the 28 lb jet/laser papers are good as well. I have seen letters from folks written on Clairefontaine loose leaf (?) and it is droolworthy. But I've not been able to find it in the US.

What exactly are you looking for - for what use, what size, what format (stitched notebook? notepad? spiral?)

Yes, we definitely have some thoughts on this topic. :)

OK, I'm excited! I'm working through all the suggestions. The Moleskin handles drier inks ok, but struggles with the Watermans and the Diamine (slight feathering and a little bleed through). Now I have in my hot little hands a shipment from Pendemonium of a tablet of G Lalo Verge de France and a Miquelrius Notebook.

I'll let you know how I do and might even post a few reviews!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Nathan

Hit the Exacompta website - they have a broad range of products available that should suit you. I use broad nibs that're really wet and I'm enjoying the Quo Vadis journal, Habana journal and Clairefontaine notebook they sent as samples. All are very happy with Waterman ink from my B, BB and stub nibs. PR ink has some drying time issues. Best of all is the Herbin ink - I've gotten that to write even in Eccolo journals where the more saturated inks skip and it dries quickly.

I use Original Crown Mill for correspondence and like it a lot. Have never had feathering issues with it. It is quite expensive here (if and when I can find it), so I don't use it all the time.

May I suggest Whitelines from Sweden, I have become a convert to their notebooks and their paper takes ink from wet pens really well.

The only downside is Whitelines is hard to find in the USA save for one or two dealers.

I would not say anthing that has not been said in terms of suggestions, but I will give a caution:

If you choose to use a highly saturated ink (PR or Noodler's), a gusher will lay too much ink down. Even my XF Safari (closest to a true XF I have that is not Japanese or random vintage sheaffer) puts too much ink to dry. It is the paper/ink combo that does not work. Just a word of caution.

I'm living on another planet, where Moleskine paper bleeds and where Clairefontaine is excelling for Fountain pens.

As a user experience I suggest Nightingale Premium Notebooks as a best choice for wet writing. Fountain pens are always my first choice for writing. I have been using this brand for years and often uses fountain pen for my entire write up, the papers are opaque and also bleeds less.

Myself, I am buggo for Tomoe River paper, and you can get journals/notebooks from http://www.paperforfountainpens.com

I will say that, if the ink is a really slow drying one, you might be less enthused, but, as thin as the paper is, I have NO issues with bleeding or feathering. Show-through might pose an issue, but, honestly, I don't find it any worse with that paper than I do with a cheap legal pad from Staples...

Edit: This is not one of the notebooks from Paper For Fountain Pens, but, it might give a good idea of a wide variety of inks and pens on Tomoe River paper: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/267209-finally-finished-a-sampler/

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
