Signum pens

For all you Italian pen users—how does Signum stack up with the other Italian pen makers? I have an Ornamenta that has a wonderful, wet, luscious nib that is a joy to write with. I also have an Orione with the steel nib and it is a bit of a dry writer. I only have an Aurora Talentum to compare these with. They seem very well made and at least the Ornamenta is an excellent writer.

Any thoughts on Signum versus the other guys, like Stipula, Delta, Omas, etc.?

Thanks.

I think you got a dud Orione. I have one (from the original run, before they changed the colors) with a medium nib, and it's a beautiful writer.

I'm surprised Richard Binder hasn't chimed in on this thread yet.

He is now a dealer for Signum and that's as good an endorsement as you could hope for in my book - especially if you get one that he has "prepped" before shipping to you.

I had an Ornamenta and liked the nib well enough, but it was too light and small for my hand, so I sold it and bought a Visconti Van Gogh Maxi. :cloud9:

My Signum Orione is one of the very prettiest pens I have. I don't use bold nibs much, so it doesn't get as much use as it should. I should just get a second nib for it. :)

I am not crazy about the design of any of their pens, so I have never seriously considered purchasing one. As for Stipula, Delta and Omas, I own pens from each of them and only have good things to say.

I contacted Empire Pens about the dry writing of the Orione and Steve Zucker emailed me back within the hour and said to send it to them and they would do whatever was needed so that I am happy with the pen. Wow, that's pretty good customer service. Hopefully they can just adjust the nib so it is not so stingy with ink flow.

My Ornamenta was bought from Richard Binder, hence the great writing. I bought the Orione from a large internet (and B&M) store.

My teal Signum Orione is one of the prettiest modern pens *and* best writers I own!

Yes, it "only" has a steel nib...but what a great nib :cloud9: , so reliable and smooth...and the deep greenish-blue colour of the cap and barrel....

(sorry, I just get a bit carried away when it comes to that pen)

I used to own a Signum Nova and it was a great pen. Sold it to a fellow FPN member and he loves it as well. Delightful writer and nice nibs.

FWIW, Richard Binder announced that Signum is changing to a direct-sale model, and he will therefore no longer be a dealer. Accordingly, he is selling through his remaining stock at 50% of MSRP. I expect other dealers will be offering similar discounts.

I have a Signum Ornamenta. It writes just as well as my other Italians.

Hello,

just to say that recently Signum added a nice catalogue to the website (I don't remember it was there this spring when I last checked...)

here's the link:

Oh yeah, that Cinnamon-coloured beauty... :bonk:

Good to hear it found a good home, though... :)

I have the same pen and feel exactly the same way. The steel nib on mine puts many of the much more expensive gold nibs to shame!!!!! Love that Teal color that is so deep you can get lost in it!!!!!!! Love that pen!

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought a red Orione FP a few years ago from Richard Binder at the DC pen show and consider it one of my most reliable and attractive pens in my collection. Although I'm not a big fan of the filling system, the smooth steel nib has never given me a problem.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
