Giving any pens as graduation gifts?

My nephew is graduating from high school today, second in his class and a National Merit Scholar. And in August, he will depart for UNC-Chapel Hill -- my alma mater. I am so proud of him, my heart could burst.

Josh didn't seem overly fond of the Pilot Varsity I gave him a few months ago, so no fountain pens. But I was lucky enough to find a Pierre Cardin pen set in Carolina blue at Office Depot. It has a rollerball, a ballpoint, and a mini-ballpoint/stylus. Go Heels! (And Josh! :clap1: )

I'm a TarHeel Born

And a TarHeel Bred

And when I die, I'm a TarHeel dead

So it's Rah Rah Carolina-lina

Rah Rah Carolina-lina

Rah Rah Carolina

Go to Hell State!

Congrats for your nephew Lisa - you have good reason to be proud.

Carolina is one of the premier Southern schools, and offers students premium academics and a full immersion in those magic Southern socialization rituals that morph well raised boys into well grounded successful men.

Maybe Josh didn't bond with the Pilot Varsity because he has not yet been spasmed into a claw grip by writers' cramp. Many smart college freshmen find they are taking extensive notes for the very first time in their young academic career.

Why not wait until Fall Break and then give him last year's Carolina Blue Pilot Vanishing Point (in Fine if he's a science and math guy - in Medium if he's a liberal arts guy)? Ink up the pen and show Josh that writer's cramp instantly becomes a bad memory with a fountain pen. Black ink cartridges - freshmen always need to photocopy their notes for their classmates.

I think the VP is ideal for note taking because it eliminates the cap / uncap / cap /uncap hassel in a lecture.

Again Lisa - congrats for your nephew. Go Heels. It's my alma mater too.

Wait a minute, there was a Carolina Blue VP? As I was searching for my own graduation gift (my mom asked me what I wanted) for graduation from undergrad, I was looking for a Carolina Blue fountain pen because that's where I'll be next year, and the closest I could come was last year's (?) Sheaffer Agio in what they called Serene Blue, and I went ahead and asked for it, but it's not really close enough to satisfy (not to mention it's a medium and my handwriting really needs a fine point). On top of that, I've been thinking about investing in a VP anyway. Can someone point me to one of these VPs?

Namiki Pilot made a limited edition Vanishing Point in Carolina Blue (they called it Ice Blue or Blue Ice) a couple of years ago. I think it was $160 new, now occasionally available on eBay for under $100.

I like the Vanishing Points for note taking because during a seminar or lecture you don't have to uncap and recap the pen dozens of times to prevent the nib from drying.

Hark the Sound of TarHeel Voices,

Ringing Clear and True

Singing Carolina's praises

Shouting N.C.U.

Hail to the Brightest Start of all

Clear its Radience Shine

Carolina Priceless Gem

Receive all Praises Thine

Ginnievere, there is also a Pilot Prera available in what looks like Carolina blue, though I haven't seen one in person to confirm. Preras are good pens for not much money. Ujuku on eBay usually has some. But Ray is right, the VP would be easier for note-taking purposes. Whatever you decide, enjoy your time in Chapel Hill! I sure did.

And thanks, Ray, for your congratulations. Josh is the kind of kid who succeeds at whatever he decides to do. We all expect great things from him.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
