Best vintage FP for formal parties?

Hi everyone,

I am invited to a party next month. The party is hold by the professors from university. I don't want to be too casual, although I am not asked to be dressed formally (It just a lunch and season meeting) . I decided to put a FP in my pocket instead of nothing. However, what I have now would only be the red Esprit due to my Waterman 12 does not have a clip.

I don't want to use the Parker Esprit since it is short and fall into my vest pocket :headsmack: . I want to have a longer one and one that is not too attractive and elegant but it can be used to represent myself, a professor's senior private assistant .

Please give me some suggestion!!! :crybaby:

Thank you.

Vintage? How about a plain black Parker "51" with a matte aluminum cap?

That's a winner or maybe an Esterbrook in grey or black. A Lamy 2000 would also be a good solid pen.

A lamy 2000 is a nice solid option and not flashy pen.

Also any Pelikan would be perfect,of course I would recommend the M800.

A Mont Blanc 146/149 might send a certain message that you are trying to show off so I am not sure if this would be the perfect pen for this occasion but its always an option.

If you want to go vintage I'd say Parker Vacumatic or even a Sheaffer Snorkel.

Have a look what the Prof uses and then go one notch down...

If these Professors impressions are swayed by the pen in your pocket I suggest you find a different university.

Put a No.2 pencil in your pocket. It shows you are prepared, thoughtful, thrifty, practical, and not ostentatious.

Since this is more an "appearance" issue, I guess one of the things to make sure of is, whatever the pen, the clip color matches your watch and buckle. Gold w/gold, silver w/silver, etc. Then the body of the pen should match what your wearing color-wise. A black pen will fit just about anything.

That being said, I bet no one notices or cares. But some say objects have a certain "totemic" value, so just take whatever pen that will lend you confidence and intelligence.

P.S. Is this a gathering just of old fogey professors or will there be hot babes there? What department is this..?

Bravo. I find it incredible that those in academia (or anywhere, for that matter) are going to care...at least the academia that I know, anyway. I happened to notice one of the emeritus profs in my parts using a old Phileas, but that was only because he was doing the crossword at lunch. Take whatever pen you feel like using that day!

Ok. You are going to a "formal" party.

First, get away from trying to impress the professor or anyone else. It never really works.

Use a pen you are comfortable with. This is most important. Seriously, just go with a pen that you already have and are used to using and happy with. That's what counts. If some academic type doesn't like it, well, if they grade based on your pen, there are some serious issues at that university.

If you really feel you need to "dress" for the occasion, well...

A classic pen is always nice in black with either gold or silver trim to match your attire, vintage or otherwise. There are lots of models out there. A Pelikan in black. A Pelikan of any kind would probably be just fine. A vanishing point in black or maybe even gray. Sensible writer that isn't too flashy if you have it in your pocket. I haven't seen the blue or green Phileas models, but the marbled red is nice, dark with black endcaps, and not too flashy. Cost consciousness would lead me here.

Oh wait. This may be a good excuse to get a pen that you really want but haven't been able to justify. In that case, work backward and figure out what pen you really want. If it seems too expensive or outlandish, post a query here and we'll help you justify the purchase.

Lol, yes. And if this university party is in Hawaii and there is a possibility of "hot babes" being there, you'd better finaggle an invite for Doug so he can advise you throughout the night.

Grey Striated Sheaffer Balance or Parker Vacumatic, restored by one of our folks here. Quiet, classy and will impress those who know.

Sheaffer Targa or Imperial. I don't own a Targa, so would only guess at that. But my Imperial VI is the only pen that anyone's ever commented on - "Hey, nice pen!". And it is, completely classy.

Who says those Iowans didn't know how to dress up?

I have the same sort of experience. My Targa is the only pen that has gotten comment from people who aren't "into pens." Well, and an artist friend who I allowed to write with my pens.

The party is hold in a someone's home. Most of the professors are over 60, with grey hair and we are from applied science. My professor is one of them and used to keep a pen in his vest pocket. The pen is Mont Blanc FP but not sure which model he is using. I don't want my pen being similar or 'more outstanding' than the professors I meet in the party. And part of them are haven't meet before.

I am still <25 years old. I don't think pen with gold/silver cap would suite me as I don't use pure gold/sliver watch. I use G-shock/dive watches with black colour.

Meanwhile, I do have 2 favourite bands, they are Parker and Waterman. Their pens' appearances are good so that I don't know which model should I buy. However, I hate 51 which I mentioned in past. I will not buy a 51, or something similar even I have no other choices.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
