Sheaffer Ink in MB's

Recommended Posts

I like a slightly wet FP and the MB ink that I have been using did not give me that. I tried in my Boheme, 146 and 149 pens, so it could not be a case of a dry nib that needed adjustment.

Also, I tried the Black and Blue-Black inks. Still the same dry feeling.

I switched to Sheaffer Black, and the ink definitely flow better.

Is the Sheaffer ink likely to damage the internals of the FP's.

Guys, your thoughts and comments please.

Regards

So long as you are not using India ink or any kind of ink not intended for a fountain pen, any ink should work with any pen. Note that this is a "best case scenario." In this case, the Sheaffer ink will not harm your pen anymore than the Mont Blanc ink would.

The dryness you're noticing with the Mont Blanc ink is more because it is a less saturated ink, thus it is not quite so bold when it goes onto the paper. If you are content with the Sheaffer ink then by all means use it.

Same rules and regulations apply with all pens. They need to be flushed at least every couple of months, preferably monthly and as I said, don't put anything in it besides water/ammonia/dish soap solution or ink.

If you are feeling more adventurous you should look at Noodler's and Private Reserve inks, as they have some of the broadest ranges of selection in colors out there.

If you're looking for a nice wet ink that is sure to write wet, then try Waterman's Florida Blue.

Hi,

I often see Skrip recommended as a trouble-free ink for use in all pens, vintage and modern. My own experience bears that out: I have never had a problem with any Skrip ink in any pen (including MBs), and I happen to like many of the current colors.

If you are concerned about possible damage to your pen, then the proven inks like Sheaffer, Waterman, etc. are - in my view - the last ones you should worry about. If you're happy with the Skrip, use it without reservations. (Of course, I assume that normal reasonable cleaning protocols will be observed.)

Cheers,

Jon

Thanks guys.

Another observation-

When I sign, the "R" in my name is written with speed and when ever I am using MB ink, a squeking sound is generated by friction between paper and the metal of the nib, probably because the feed is not able to deliver enough ink for the nib to glide over the paper.

This happens with all 3 of my FP's.

Have you guys had similar experience? Any solution to this ?

However with Sheaffer ink I do not have this problem.

Yeah the squeaking can happen in some pens, not just MB. I'm not sure what causes it and thus, can't offer a solution. But I'd like to find out!! :D

And yes, Sheaffer Skrip is perfectly safe to use in MB pens.

  • 2 years later...

After quite a number of years, I am putting it all together and returning to the fountain-pen (MBs), so this issue is now a passed-by concern. Thank-you!

Sheaffer ink is what i've used with my MBs..149, 146, 144 and never had any problem whatsoever. I love the watery texture and boldness of the sheaffer ink.

your pen silently speaks about your character!
