Good, Cheap Notebook or Filler Paper

I need some good paper for school. I prefer a notebook, but filler paper will do just fine. Can someone recommend a good, cheap option?

Roaring Spring Environotes is a good, there is slight show through at times but it is good overall, cheap, and recycled. If you are fine with spending a little more money Miquelrius is great. Those two suggestions are good if you are in the US. If you are in Europe I recomend Clairefontaine and Rhodia.

There's a handful of us who enjoy using the Mead Composition Notebooks that you can pick up for about $2. The pages aren't removable, but the paper quality is pretty good. Haven't had any trouble with any of my pens on it (and I think I've probably tested about 15 or 20 on the pages).

I'll second Ryan's recommendationof the Mead Comp notebooks.

As far as filler paper is concerned, I purchased some Mead filler paper last fall during the back-to-school sales. They were the US-made kind, and they seem to work well with even wet writing pens. Only thing is kinda thin, so you cant use both sidesof the sheet.

I like Mead composition books also - the only downside is the thinness of the paper, so that writing may show through, even if it doesn't bleed through. But, I like the stiff cardboard covers, and you can fold the spine back, which is quite handy.

 

As for filler paper, I assume you mean looseleaf? Just when I think I have found some that works great, the next batch is dreadful. I had some terrific Mead paper that was working with all my pens, then when that ran out the next set was awful. Both were (supposedly) made in the USA. Otherwise, I have tended to find that Brazil made paper seems to do better with pens than paper from other sources.

 

I've had Hilroy and Mead spiral bound notebooks that have worked very well with FP ink too. The larger ones with poly covers seem to do pretty well. The new spiral bound, poly cover notebooks from Staples are also quite FP friendly.

 

I like Miquelrius, Clairefontaine and Rhodia paper too, but they're a bit on the pricey side for the sheer volume one needs for school. I do use them for personal journals, etc.

This is a nice notebook. Last two years, late July/August, back to school sales, they were $.10 each. Think $.79 now.

Wal-Mart and Staples also had nice sales on composition notebooks, like 2-3 for $1.00-1.50.

To me, the best spiral notebook made is the Mead Five Star Quad Ruled. The paper is quite heavy for a spiral (20 lbs., I think) and takes a fountain pen quite nicely. I have never had much problem with feathering or bleed through. You might not like quad ruled, but I love it and use it for everything.

I use these same notebooks for my math classes. And I love them...They occasionally bleed through but nothing terrible just occasionally it will bleed and leave a small mark on the next page but thats only if you like write over the same spot like 3 or 4 times. I recommend it for daily use and math homework especially.

The quad version is better than the college or wide ruled because the paper is heavier.

Used them, its acceptable in my eyes but not great. There is some slight feathering (or at least widening of the line) with these. But generally a decent notebook.

I am not very successful at finding good paper at Office Depot. My recent visit, I tried my fountain pen on their filter paper selection, it was really bad. I went to War-mart and got two packs of this five stars Mead filter paper, they feathered and bled out of control as well. It is something I did not foresee, the paper felt thick, firm, smooth and it had this fairly waxy feel texture.

 

I have good experience with notebooks which are made in Brazil as someone mentioned (maybe another thread of this same topic).

 

I am thinking of going to Staples to check out their selection of filler papers. They are still made in Brazil.
