Best inexpensive pen to be used with a converter?

Ok, I give up, 2 pelikanos later, none will take a converter and neither will a Pelikan Future. I'm trying to avoid the Parker Reflex and Vector and I have a Sheaffer NN already. Any thoughts?

I'll second the Lamy Safari and add the Lamy AL-Star, Cross ATX, and Sheaffer Prelude.

Hi,

If the Pelikanos and Future don't accept a converter, send it to me and I will forward it to Chartpak, or send it to Chartpak directly. They must make it right!!!

If I'm not mistaken, Pellikanos are too small to take a converter. The Future, I believe, does.

You could always get a Parker 45 or a Sheaffer Prelude or Agio. Besides the Safari and the Phileas, they're the best c/c pens under $50.

Another recent, but discontinued option would be the Sheaffer Triumph Imperial. The latest version, which was sold back in the mid-1990's came with a conveter, and also took standard Sheaffer cartridges. They are frequently seen on eBay and other places for under $30. (See this article on PenHero.com.)

Hi,

From experience, Pelikanos do take converters. I do believe Pelikan has been making converters that are not tight enough or won't seat.

Garageboy...My 1988 Pelikano takes a Lamy Safari converter. If you get a Lamy as recommened above, you can see if your model of Pelikano works with one and then order an extra converter for it if it does. :)

You can get the Lamy Safari/All Star on e-bay for $20 plus shipping, in a variety of nibs and body colors. The gentleman who sells them is from Canada. I had a short-term problem with him when a shipment did not arrive, but he fixed it.

In a side note, the Safari is advertised as being for tough conditions. I've carried mine around Disney World all week this week, and all the shaking on rides has not caused it any problems.

The Waterman Phileas is also available on e-bay for about the same price, but not as readily. You can also pick one up in any Staples office supply store for $35, if you don't want to wait.

I have several Lamys and two Phileas pens. All are excellent writers for the price.

I'd take out the Kaweco and add the core. The converter for the Kaweco is lousy. sniffle

Core is a great heavy duty pen you can play darts with. Accepts a converter. I know you can play darts with it because I dropped mine on its point :bonk: and it seems to be fine. :)

I'll second the Parker 45. I picked up a new(old stock) Flighter version for under $35 on Ebay. Comes with a really nice slide converter that can be filled one-handed. Super nice writer, as well.

Thanks! My pelikano, two different vintages, one with metal clip and one with plastic wont take a converter (mystery brand as no one has a pelikan branded one AND a rotring one and both are too tight and doesn't fit to well) Same problem with the Future

Most inexpensive pen that takes a convertor?

:plug:

This one:

The Sheaffer School Pen (late model 122)

The convertor will cost as much, if not more than, the pen...

On the other hand, the sheaffer piston convertor is a solid piece of work that lends a nice heft to the school pen...

On the other hand, you could convert the thing to an eyedropper-filler...

On the other hand, I'm out of hands! :)

I had the no nonsense version of the sheaffer, it was ok, but my particular one had a sharp edge on the top of the tipping material

  • 2 years later...

My Pelikan Future does not accept the piston converter i bought which is a Pelikan Converter that is supposed to work with the Future.

The Tester Cartridge that the Future came with works perfectly and the pen writes beautifully but I do not want to use cartridges.

The Converter won't go in all the way and at the lightest tap if the pen is upside down it falls out.

No amount of force, gentle or not can get it to stay in place. I tried twisting as well.

It simply does not fit. Upon physical inspection it seems that it SHOULD fit. Looks like the right size and all but it won't stay in.

I am going out of my mind. I love this how this pen writes but if if it's cartridge or nothing i choose nothing.

Pens I want: Pelikan M805, Pelikan Majesty

Stuff on the way: Diamine Prussian Blue

From what i can tell I think that it is not the hole in the converter but rather the shape of the head of the converter itself that prevents it from going down that extra depth and creating the friction to stay in place.

This converter should not be advertised as working on a Pelikan Future if it doesn't at all (or at least not on a consistent basis)

Pen truly writes well. I am impressed but this is a problem :(

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
