New leaking Jinhao fixed

Hello everybody,

Just a few days ago I received a new Jinhao X450 from a Chinese seller. Soon after I started writing, the pen leaked. Ink came dropping from the nib until the converter was empty, and my paper was a mess. :( This was the very first problem I ever had with any Chinese pen. After I rinsed and flushed the pen, I pulled out the nib together with the feed, and while doing so I realized that the feed was somewhat loose. So, I cleaned everything under water, dried it and assembled the pen. I filled the converter with ink again, and everything worked as it's supposed to. :)

My conclusion: the feed had either loosened, or wasn't assembled correctly. A small cause for a big mess!

So, if someone has a similar problem, this may be the answer.

Best regards,

Klaus

I have a couple of Huashilai 3000s that would occasionally drop a big drop of ink on the paper, of course without warning. After reading around on the FPN, I suspected that the converters weren't seated properly, and were letting air in, and ink out. Reseating both converters fixed the problem.

One of the nice things about really cheap Chinese pens is that you can pull them apart and fiddle with the bits without feeling anxious. Of course learning something about fountain pens at the same time.

I spoke too soon. The leaking problem occurred again. Now I suspected the converter. So I exchanged the converter of the X450 with the one of my X750, expecting the X750 to leak now. It didn't. So far, after writing about three pages with each of the pens, none of them leaks. Now I'm pretty much clueless as to what caused the leakage in the beginning. I also found that the converter that came with the Jinhaos differs a little from the "universal standard" converter. The opening is just a tad larger. Any idea where to buy converters for Jinhaos (at a reasonable price!)?

xfountainpens.com sells a package of three under the accessories page (left hand side of home page).

Hope it helps.

Hi There; I am surprised that you have had a problem with any Jinhao pen, I haqve more than 50 and none have ever given a problem, maybe a new employee assembled yours. They are very good with their quality control most of the time, If you bought the pen from gotoshool888 can I suggest that you try them for other convertors, that might fix your problem.I always advise that all convertors should be thoroughly wased out with a small amount of detergent and then rinsed with warm water. Regards. Bryan

Resurrecting an old thread - I have the same issue now.

Jinghao x450 wet to the point of leaking. Ink runs down the underside of the nib and forms a drop, then splurges all over the paper. I've had the nib and feed out and tried setting the nib further out from the feed; I've swapped out the converter that came with it for a different converter and it still gushes. I've put in a different nib and feed (from an x750) and it still gushes.

Anything else I can try, before I bin it?

Try a standard international cartridge.

Also, if you have a loupe, look inside the section where the converter/cartridge seats, and see if there is a crack somewhere.

Thank you. I couldn't see into the section very well, but I cleaned it out thoroughly with a long-bristled brush, and it does seem better. I think there may have been something down there stopping the converter sitting correctly. I have also swapped out the very fragile converter that came with it to a better quality one.

I have my fingers crossed that it will work now. So far, it seems to be ok.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
