Ink Splatter

Hi all

I am a newbie here and apologise if this has been covered before/seems obvious etc. I am a recent convert to fountain pens and have picked up a nice Conway Stewart 480. The pen writes beautifully however I am experiencing one issue. Ever so often when I pick up the pen or move it a blob of ink will come out of it and splatter somewhere, occasionally on the paper and sometimes on my desk. Now this isn't a big issue to wipe clean or blot on the paper but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to reduce the occurrence.

Many thanks

Matt

Welcome to the world of fountain pens. Indeed, FP's will splatter ink all over the place if they're roughly handled. I dropped an Esterbrook pen this morning and later found the cap was filled with sticky ink! Move slowly and carefully when using a fountain pen. Did you know that some of them are made of celluloid, which is another name for cellulose nitrate - gun cotton. So treat it like you're moving a bomb that's primed to go off at any excessive jostle, and you'll stay happy and ink-free for the rest of your FP carrying days.

The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it.

An ink splatter problem can become very discouraging if it persists. You can wipe up an ink spot at home, but if you are out and about with the pen it becomes an intolerable mess.

Any FP will drip ink if you sling it hard enough. I asssume you are not flinging the pen about like a sabre, so it sounds like you have an ink flow issue with the ink feed. If you bought the pen new in the box, I would contact the seller or Conway Stewart to have the ink feed looked at. A CS pen is too good a pen to have an on-going issue like that.

It doesn't sound like you're treating it roughly (If you were, you'd be complaining about a LOT more than a few blots of ink!). Take it to be serviced and looked at. I think you have an inkflow problem. A little tinkering by a trained technician will sort it out.

Welcome to the world of fountain pens! Of nibs, of feeds, of curious fillers, of inks and blotters, of celluloid, metal, hard rubber and vintage mysteries found in old desks in attics of locked-up houses, long-forgotten...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
