Portable writing surface or desk

Are there recommendations for a portable writing surface or desk to use on one's lap when traveling?

Thanks.

For something light in weight that wouldn't slide off of your lap, you may want a bean bag lap desk. The writing surface on mine is 15 1/2 inches by 11 5/8 inches. I also have a Rotring Profil. This is a plastic board with 2 built-in flat clips to hold your paper, one on each side. The writing surface is 18" by about 11" or 12" and has a ruler on the longer side. I've had this for years, but it's something you might find on e-Bay. The bean bag lap desks should be easier to find.

I use a clipboard... they're hard to beat for portablity, but maybe not the greatest writing surface. It's all about trade offs...

I found some great ones in Bed Bath and Beyond for 3.99. They are wonderful. They are not made out of wood but rather, plastic which accounts for the low cost. They were also on sale. See if they still have some hanging around. You may be pleasantly surprised! :)

Actually Office Depot has some very nice ones - lap desks - which is made of a solid surface mounted on a comfortable pillow like base. The top is curved to fit around the abdomen. There are varying prices up to about $69.00 IIRC, but the one I like most cost $29.95 I think it was. I use it now in place of my desk at home too. Desks (except for those school desks) have never been quite comfortable to me for writing so I'll sit at my desk, and but use the lap desk to write and the big desk for organization.

Drop by Office Depot and check them out. I'd guess the other office supply chains would carry a selection as well.

Check out the thread in pen and paper parephernalia on this subject. I'm looking for the same thing but they are not easy to find here in the uk. There were lots of good suggestions that I'm following up although the dollar rate is good for me at the moment the cost of shipping is prohibitive.

My favorite portable writing desk is a shallow Melamine tray, about 15" x 9". Similar to this one: http://shopstashtea.com/900789.html

Flipped over (so the tray is upside down), the edges of the tray "catch" on my knees so it doesn't slip around. It works great for writing or for using a laptop. It's lightweight and easy to pack up. Doesn't take up much room in a suitcase, and fits in a briefcase or backpack very nicely.

I have an aluminum forms case that has room for paper and envelopes on the inside and is a stable support for writing. Was ordered at work but I have seen similar at Office Depot. There is a clipboard type clip on one side and a metal flap as well.

I picked up a wood one from Bed, Bath & Beyond today that has a concave cut out to fit around my belly, and a cushion underneath. I like it a lot.

Collect few cardboards that are in back of paper pads. Glue two of them together to make it thick enough. Put some binder clip (AKA foldback clip) or bulldog clip to its edge in order to keep your papers in place.

How dare you exhibit such frugality on FPN!!! :ltcapd:

Certainly frugal enough, but still not a broad enough surface.

Well, maybe you should buy some plywood board and saw it to right size. Use also paint or lack, if needed.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
