I had a 1931 black and bronze Symetrik about seven years ago. It had a fabulous flexible nib, which unfortunately developed a small crack at the base. John Mottishaw expertly repaired it, and it continued to be a wonderful writer. It was just a bit on the small side for me, so I sold it. Great writer and beautiful pen if the size is okay for you.

Can't seem to edit my post even though it has only been up for about an hour. I'm referring to the new remake of the Symetrik. I wonder if it's any larger than the original?

My mistake! I wasn't aware of the modern version, but just now did a Google search. It definitely is a larger pen than the one I had. Nice looking pens with a 14 k nib for under $70.

Obviously though, I cannot comment on how they perform. Sorry I cannot be very helpful.

I didn't see any reviews for the Conklin Symetrik and was wondering if anyone had one and could comment about it.

I bought one last year - a close out at Joon for $60. At first, it ran a little rough on me and I wondered about the ink flow too. But, I cleaned it and set it aside for a while and now it's fine. Good wet line and the 14K nib is very nice. I find myself modifying my pen rotation just so I can use it more.

Modern Conklin pens have had some QC issues from what I've read. Just do a search (top right corner at the top of this page) in this forum and the Fountain Pen Reviews forums and you'll get some good first hand info.

I bought one of the new Symetriks about 6 months ago off he Bay in the blue pearl. It's a gorgeous pen and I get a lot of compliments on it. It writes a very nice wet line. It's a medium gold nib. The nib seems a little small for this size pen, but it writes so well that it has become one of my daily carrying pens. I am using red small international cartridges in it to make notes in the margins of my daily business log and sometimes don't use it for days, but it writes the first time every time. I've been very happy with it and, personally, I think the pearl blue is stunning.

Best regards,

Jerry

  • 3 years later...

I own a Conklin Symetrik FP in red/taupe, medium nib. I really love it! It writes very smoothly. I put J. Herbin 1670 ink in the first time and that flowed very well. I am now using J. Herbin Vert olive and that ink does very well also in this FP.

I have two of them, one in the green and one red, both with fine nibs and love them. They seem to write quite well with all of the inks I've tried in them so far. It's a great pen/nib combination for the cost.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
