Using standard ink cartridges with Waterman pens

Recommended Posts

Hello,

due to the demise of my old, beloved fountain pen, I have been thinking about buying a replacement, a new Waterman Expert. However, I haven't been able to determine whether I could (or even should) use standard, commercial ink cartridges with it. I usually use short, black "Life Line" cartridges (manufactured somewhere in Europe, I guess - I live in Hungary), and have been very happy with them - they are cheap, and look pretty good, too. When I inquired about the pen itself, the retailer was vague about ink, and recommended that I buy my ink directly from Waterman, and refrain from commercial stuff.

My question to the Esteemed Experts of the forums are:

-Is it even physically possible to use a generic cartridge with a Waterman Expert?

-If it is possible, is it advisable? Will I meet no problems, or will the ink have a harmful effect on my pen?

-Finally, if it is not possible to use generic cartridges with the new pen, are there alternatives I could/should look into - e.g. fountain pens which are similar in size, shape and price to the Waterman Expert, and are operable with standard sized, generic cartridges?

Thank you in advance.

Decidedly not an expert, but I decided to answer anyway. :D

I use generic carts in my waterman all the time. I started using them in it before I was.....um.....educated enough about pens to know that there were different style carts. Sometimes it's a really snug fit, but I don't think I've done any damage. As for the ink damaging the pen, it's going to depend on the ink in the cart, but most inks won't be a problem.

Now the real experts can respond.

I Have two Waterman Expert fountain pens and I use Mont Blanc, and generic cartridges I found on ebay in them with no problem. My daughter uses one of them in college, she doesn't like to be bothered with bottled ink, so she uses cartridges all the time with no problems.

My experience with Waterman pens is that you can put a short standard cartreidge into them with no problem. If, however, you try to store a second cartridge in, say, a beautiful green Hemisphere, it will get stuck. And nothing will get it out.

Just sayin'.

Hi,

Most any fountain pen ink will work in a Waterman. Waterman cartridges and convertor and Rotring cartridges and convertors interchange. After all, Rotring and Waterman are both owned by Sanford. International cartridges should fit.

Hello,

Thank you for all the replies. My fears have been dispelled - I guess I can safely get my hands on one of those beauties after all. I can always ask you about even better inks later... :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
