There is this current thread to look at:

You might want to define your idea of red with a little more detail, and include some idea of the primary use for it. Aside from the large degree of subjectivity and relativity in basic color perception, the paper, pen, and typical lighting all modify the color.

FWIW: Of my red inks, my favorite and "reddest" is Noodler's Devil Red, from Swisher Pens. It is considerably brighter on paper than it appears in online photos. The bulletproof quality is a bonus. Lamy red looks really red in the cartridge, but is very pink on paper. Parker Penman Ruby is really deep and rich, but out of production.

Agree with the comments on Devil Red.

I am looking for the reddest red that I can buy.

Recommendations, please.

Thanks for the help.

Harv

For a true and nicely saturated red, I like Waterman Red and Quink Red (which is discontinued, but still in the supply chain at various sources online and B & M stores).

I would not at all recommend Pelikan Red, which is orange in hue.

Regards,

Ray

Waterman Red is stands out like a fire engine. I use it often to mark up documents at work. My staff hates it.....

Levenger Cardinal Red is quite bright. If you want Waterproof take a look at Swisher (Noodler) True Rouge.

My PA also would say Waterman Red is the brightest red. When I last used it to amend something she said she thought I was shouting at her in ink, so I changed to Pelikan Violet for marking corrections, which she says is kinder!

But, I do think it is a great, bright red.

My other red of choice is Monaco Red from Diamine - not bright, but a nice colour.

Levenger's Cardinal Red is my favorite. True, deep red, without the slightly pink cast of Waterman's. Waterman's may be brighter, but it's also lighter in hue. Cardinal red is gorgeous.

Current favorite pen: Montblanc 144 Meisterstuck purchased at Art Brown in 1984. After decades, every part has been replaced except the nib. Still a gorgeous writing instrument, rock-solid reliable, gives me hours of pleasure to use.

Current favorite ink: Colorverse Supernovs

Current favorite paper: Romeo notepads

I was just looking at Levenger's colors here. Is there somewhere that shows them relative to some others? So far, this link that FloridaRandy posted is one of the best actual comparison of many red's that I have seen, but unfortunately Levenger is not included.

Edit: I also noticed this somewhat negative comment from "Glenn's Pen Page" where he reports not liking Levenger inks because of easy smudging/smearing even if dry. Don't know how true that is for others...nor if he intended that for their Levenger Cobalt Blue primarily...but it gave me pause.

Personally, I find it hard to distinguish the different reds on a computer screen. They all look very much the same.

I've had no smudging problems with Levenger Cardinal Red. Truly, it's the red I was dreaming of. It's the last red I'll buy. Offering to sell my Waterman red (which is pinkish).

Cardinal Red is one of those reds that has a little blue in it, if you know what I mean. It's rich. It's a great, great red. And the large cartridges are now on sale at Levenger for $5.95 w/ free shipping. Can't beat it.

Slim you could try the Ink Sampler program over at The Pear Tree Pens (www.peartreepens.com). At least then you could judge the inks for yourself. Except of course the Levenger inks.

Good luck. Let us know what you finally decide is the reddest red.

Sounds like that is worth trying. Where are you finding Cardinal Red on sale? I don't see it on sale at Levenger's site. Thanks

Oh, finally I did see it listed under the cartridges section. These are large cartridges that they said are unlikely to fit a lot of pen types which is why they are closing out this item at the reduced price, and by phone, they said they are close to running out...so thanks again for the tip.

For that price and free shipping, I ordered 3 boxes of the Levenger's Cardinal Red cartridges, and will just remove the ink with a needle. I also ordered bottles of Caran d' Ache Sunset, & Noodler's: Empire Red, Fox Red, Standard Red, & Widow Maker Red (love that name).

Levenger's large cartridges will fit Parker and Aurora pens. They may also fit some of the True Writers. They do fit the old Levenger inkball pens, if anybody besides me has one.

I have one of those! Thanks for the tip. They're probably all out of the red by now, though, but I'll look in and see.

Noodler's Ottoman Rose is a favorite red of mine, though I also like Visconti's burgundy and MB's Je t'aime. (It's probably pretty obvious I like darker reds.) A lot of the red reds seem orangish to me. I don't have the Waterman, though. Sounds like a good one to try.

You may find that how red a clour is will also depend on what pen you are writing with to a certain extent, a wet writter will give you more of a bright colour and a dry writter will give you a lighter tone-generally speaking of course.

I was talking to Pendemonium and had them look at this link of ink displays which they agreed is a fabulous resource, but their comment was that the reds they sell and have looked at in person don't look like that image. While I got all the reds in my above post, they most highly recommended Widow Maker the most.

Just bought PR Fiesta Red. Can barely stop to type, writing with it a lovely experience. Wow! Did I miss the memo on this ink? Absolutely one of the richest colours I have ever tried. Van Gogh M nib.

Never heard of that red. So far, I tested the Noodler Red, Empire, Fox, & Widow Maker. Hands down the Widow Maker is the richest looking of these four, with plain red next best looking. Empire has a more pastel/pink flavor. Fox has a bit of orange shade.

Still have the Levenger Cardinal Red, and Caran d' Ache Sunset coming.
