Do you have a list of your Pens?

PAKMAN

Recommended Posts

I thought this would be a fun subject for my 1000th post! I recently finished inventorying and making a list of all my Pens and Ink. Wow what a task. I figured it would be a good idea in case someone took them of they were lost in a disaster. Then I realized that my computer could also be lost in the same event, so I need to list them somewhere else. Where else than among the friends I have found here on FPN. Of course if anyone gets any ideas about absconding with any of my goodies, I must warn you about our watch dog Sugar. (I guess I really need to get a tougher sounding name for my watch dog!!) Anyway, I would love to see your inventory list of Pens and Ink, who knows we may have some pens we need to trade!!

Nice inventory and congrats on number 1000! I am surprised no sailors or Omas pens. I must ask what are your favorite three? And why?

Nice work on that and congrats on the 1000th post. I love making lists myself and use the jonro database. As soon as I figure out how to copy and paste from it I'll add mine.

A good post and by the sounds of it a great pen collection. I keep thinking about a proper inventory but guess I am too lazy to start I even downloaded jonro's database and made a start but haven't really got very far.

Maybe start by photgraphing the pens, did this a couple of years ago, but collection has grown a bit since then.

PelikanPenman,

I've mostly spent my money on vintage pens with a few moderns thrown in. I've eyeballed some Sailor and Omas pens but my list of 'want to buy pens' is still too long for them to make it on the list yet. Biggest concentration of pens have been Parkers, Sheaffers and Waterman's. But I really love those Pelikans.

My top three would have to be my Pelikan Grand Place with a Binderized crisp italic nib (prettiest pen and having fun trying to learn to write in calligraphy), my Vintage Wahl Lapis blue Personal Point Flex-Nib Fine point (my Wahl black and pearl is prettier but I love the flex nib in this one, trying to learn to copperplate with this pen) , and my Parker Sr. Streamlined Duofold Black and Pearl Pen (fantastic pen, took me forever to find such a nice example of this pen and it was bought with birthday money).

My best writter and most used pen is my Pelikan 400 fine point. The pen that was the hardest to get my hands on for a decent price was my Waterman #5 with a Red Keyhole nib. My biggest dissapointment has been my Lamy 2000.

I also keep an inventory of my pens. I include my rollerballs as well as my fountain pens. For now, I use a Microsoft Word table. If the size of my collection warranted it, I would migrate to a database. In addition to storing descriptions of the pens themselves, I also include a Comments column that I use to keep track of such things as annoyances (if any) I've experienced with each pen, and how I resolved the problem (assuming I have resolved it). I also have a column for inks, that keeps track of what ink or inks seem to work best with each pen, and conversely which inks do not work well with the pen.

Addendum: After the table, but in the same document, I have a photo of each pen.

Thanks for the well presented reply Pakmanpony. Any chance of some more details on the italic nib, such what size? Any chance of writing sample with it? Sorry been thinking about gettting an italic nib for awhile and would like to hear what you have to say on it. I have heard quite a lot lately about problems with the Lamy.

Okay I have to ask, what is your list of want to buy? Thanks again.

Cheers.

Perry, congratulations on hitting 1000 posts!

Nice collection - I like Black & Pearl very much and prefer to collect vintage rather than modern pens too.

Nice Simpsonized avatar you got there.

I would like to get a Binderized crisp italic soon.

Currently working on mine using jonro's database. I'm about 50% there and think mine will fall a little short of your's.

I recently finished inventorying and making a list of all my Pens and Ink.

At one point I had designed loose leaf sheets (one per pen) to inventory my collection (I put them in a binder). I included as much information as I could (maker, dates of manufacture and when I got it, notes on condition, nib, what I paid, etc), and I just eventually got bogged down. I probably made it through 75 to 100 pens and then just really lost interest in continuing. Maybe when I am enjoying the sweet fruits of retirement I can come back to this project. Congratualtions on sticking with this and getting your collection down on paper (I do think that it is a good idea, I just don't have the time/gumption right now).

The Crisp Italic is a Richard Binder Gold Pelikan 200 BB Nib ground to a 1.1 mm. It currently resides in my Pelikan 600 Grand Place pen. It is sweet! I don't have any examples in the computer right now, I'll try to scan or photo one tomorrow night. My other italic nib is also a Binder. It is a Gold Pelikan 200 B ground to a .9 mm cursive italic on one side and a fine nib on the back side (ItaliFine), it presently resides in my Blue "Puddle" Pelikan Blue 200 Tradition pen.

My current want list is:

Parker 51 Teal blue with gold cap

Waterman #7 Red or Purple nib

Pelikan 800 Blue Stripe

Visconti Divine Proportion

Waterman 100 Year blue

Waterman Serenite (wood or blue)

Pelikan M400 Tortoise

Conklin BCHR crescent filler

Mont Blanc Dumas

Pelikan Lapis

I use a small database program that allows me to keep a list of my pens and CD collection. It is called List Pro and I sync it with my Treo phone. I also have a photo of each pen for insurance purposes.

Again thank you for the detailed response. Sounds like I may just have to give the italic a go. Do not suppose you would like to sell me your M600 Grand with the italic nib... :ltcapd:

You have some really nice pens on your wish list, no wonder you do not have room for the OMAS. Good look finding the Pelikan Lapis, they are not easy to find and when they do come up they are fairly expensive. But that is one pen that is on my wish list also.

The Grand was a present from my sweet wife for Christmas, better hang on to it!! I probably won't be able to get a Pelikan Lapis but I have been looking for some Lapis rod stock so I can get Chris Burton to make my 800 red stripe into a semi Lapis by making a custom binde for it!!

Thanks Pep!!

I love those Black and Pearls!! Don't you have a Sheafer Black and Pearl?

I hear Richard is now making an italic that is somewhere between a Crisp and a Cursive, that won't tend to catch on the paper quite as much as a crisp because he has smoothed the corners but still gives great defination between horizontal and vertical lines. I think that is what I would try!

I keep my inventory in my signature. Of course, now that I'm running out of space I'll have to find another method! =^)

Dear Splicer,

I see you have an Emotica. How do you like it? Especially the grippiness of the section, or rather the lack thereof, is a concern to me. How do you find the 'soft' nib? I like the look of it.I hope you love it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
