Clipboard clip advise

I'm seriously considering getting one of these clipboards. They offer three different clip styles shown here. Does anyone know the relative pros/cons of these clip styles? I haven't used the mousetrap clip in over 20 years; are they durable or do they stretch over time?

We have some clipboards that the company has had for more then twenty years, they are still useful and still “clippy.” We are talking about some real cheap clipboards here. The most basic stamped steel clip (The one marked at the link as Type #2 is similar). Given reasonable care they should last for at least that long. Ours have not been exactly carefully used, I think the company may have had to replace one or two in the last few years. Not because the clip part failed, but because the masonite board finally chipped away, from being dropped too often, so much so that they weren’t useful as a writing surface any longer.

Well, with a board like this, they might not rivet the clip on. If it is screwed or bolted you could always replace it over time. Even if riveted, it can be replaced!

My wife bought a wood-crafted clipboard. I gave her a hard time about it because I am more like Harry - just give me an old clipboard.

She has used her's daily for going on six years and is asked about it quite regularly.

The burled board was very handsome! The huge clips can be intrusive... don't know about the others..

Wonder if this company has been approached to make pen holders?

With such lovely finishes I'd buy one.

I asked this company about their clips durability and they said that they will replace any clip that fails as long as they're in business. They're a 7 year old company.

I have used clip style 1,2 and 4 and find them to be equal. I like types 1 and 4 best.

Clips 1 & 4 seem to have teeth. Do they leave teeth marks on the page? I'm leaning towards the larger and more utalitarian clip #2 although clips 1&4 are the prettiest.

Lloyd:

I almost always use a clip board, and I carry it in backpacks and briefcases. For me, I avoid clip style number 2 (the traditional clip) as the clip protrudes quite a bit and the edge is usually sharp'ish. I have concerns about the wear that this would likely cause to my briefcase. This is just my concern, and it may be totally unfounded, but I just thought that I would throw this out in case it is aconcern for you as well.

P.S. Thanks for the link. Those are very nice looking clipboards, and I may think about getting something like that.

  • 4 years later...

Sorry to post to such an old thread, but I wonder if anyone knows the new whereabouts of this company, Spiritwoods. Lloyd's original link no longer works. Maybe they just went out of business. A pity---they made amazing clipboards with pen/pencil boxes attached!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
