Looking for Brown Ink That Flows Well - Cleans Easily - Non-Clogging For Specific Pen

ArchiMark

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Been having issues with using brown inks a specific vacuum filler pen that has a very, very narrow metal long feeder tube into barrel. Tube gets easily clogged.

So, looking for recommendations for any brown inks with good flow, easy to clean pen, and non-clogging ink.

If there any such brown inks. please let me know about them.

Thank you!

Mark

What brand is your pen? Is it a wet or dry writer? Is there a sac or celluloid to worry about?

A vintage safe brown that I enjoy is Herbin Lie de Thé, it’s a little dry. A safe wetter and darker brown is Sheaffer brown.

If it’s safe for your pen, Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Guri is a wet, flowing ink, and a good all around brown is Monteverde Brown Sugar.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 25 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

MontBlanc Noblesse M, KWZ Sheen Machine 2

Wahl-Eversharp Bantam F, FC Lapis Lazuli

I do like Waterman Brown, which has been a very easy and reliable ink; I was even able to buy some earlier this year, though it's getting hard to find. Agree with Lie de Thé. I've only used Montblanc Toffee Brown in a MB, but it behaved very well; it's just expensive.

@Penguincollector Thank you for your input!

I have a somewhat similar Herbin, gris nuage (?) somewhere....maybe I can try it....

I'd say pen is somewhere between wet and dry....it's a new vacuum filler pen, no sac, think made of acrylic resin.

Was thinking about the other inks you mention but i haven't tried those company's brown inks before.

@InkyProf  Thank you for your input! I like Waterman and MB inks but have never used their brown inks.

Think I have some ink testing to do!

@InkyProf Wow!  You actually were able to find Waterman Brown someplace?  Nice going!  I've been hoarding the one bottle I have of it, since it was discontinued a while back.

I can’t remember the source, although I posted it here at the time. I think they were out of stock shortly thereafter, though. I have a bottle and a half left… I really wish they’d resurrect it.

Yeah, I'm with you on wishing that Waterman would bring it back.

Also look into Colorverse inks. They flow very nicely, are easy to clean, and have many different shades of brown. Vanness is a great place to buy samples.

Which shade of Brown? There are so many. Jacques Herbin Caco du Brésil is earthy brown, lie de thé is warm.  :)

I would recommend getting samples if you don't want to be inundated with ink bottles. I love brown inks.

Rohrer and Klinger Sepia is very good ink. Octopus Barock Umbra is also quite nice, though it depends on your nib. It's best for soft M and above nibs for ex.

Thanks for the suggestion.....I tried R&K Verdigris ink some years ago, was nice color, but as I recall it was very dry ink in my pens.

Sepia/ Brown ink "tend" do be low on lubrication. It is my understanding that Verdigris was actually wet and lubricated. Hence my suggestion to get samples. :)

I have been quite happy with Noodler's Whaleman's Sepia.  I use it in a Monteverde MP-1 so I don't know if its easy and ready flow despite long periods between use if a function of the pen, the ink, or both but it's been easy to clean, writes well, is remarkably water-resistant, and pretty as well.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
