Available Database of Inks with Characteristics?

Ory

Recommended Posts

Hi, folks! I'm still extremely new here, so my apologies if this has been asked before or if it's just a silly question, but...

I'm wondering if anyone here has compiled a database of inks and would be willing to share? I've used things like Inkswatch and Mountain of Ink, but I've found them a tad difficult to navigate, and I was hoping someone around here might have a Google Doc or spreadsheet or something with ink characteristics like flow, sheen, water resistance, etc., already laid out.

Any chance something like this exists?

Thanks!

And @InesF has a spreadsheet with her own classification of ink by wetness: for discussion of what goes into this see the thread “An Alternative Look at Ink Wetness.”  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mSWCRuy2QofZDOiqrwxnNDqp-MJNIFhOMyRc0qyNj9U/edit?gid=0#gid=0

These are both fabulous resources by extraordinarily generous (and meticulous) FPNers.

Fountain Pen Companion may or may not prove useful as an index, sort of like InkSwatch.

I use a variety of sources to get a sense of what an ink is like. Besides Liz and Ines’ fine work, I like The Mountain of Ink blog- K will usually comment on ink characteristics. The easiest way to look individual inks up is by maker on the sidebar. You do have to read the whole entry to get a sense of the ink as a whole. Vanness 1938’s online catalog will list ink properties, wet/dry, dry times, etc. I keep track of my own ink collection using the PenPal app; it lets you rate each ink’s ability to shade or sheen, saturation levels, has a spot where you can note if a ink shimmers or chromshades, and whether it’s a dye, iron gall, or pigment. You can also search other people’s ink collections.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 25 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

MontBlanc Noblesse M, KWZ Sheen Machine 2

Waterman 52 EF, Herbin Bleu Pervenche

I am curious about this app. I wasn't able to find it on Google Play. Can you provide a link, please?

Here’s a link to the website, as I don’t know my way around the Google store.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
