Inks for Pelikan M600 old style

Apm1

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I am waiting for the postman to deliver a Pelikan M600 old style with a fine 18k monotone nib.
Excluding Pelikan inks, which other brands work well with this pen?

At home I have several options:

  • Montblanc
  • Pilot Iroshizuku
  • Sailor
  • Robert Oster
  • Waterman

Have you ever tried any of these combinations?

Thanks

I would avoid the Pilot ink -- when I got my first Pelikan (a 1990s M400) I first filled it with Iroshizuku Yama-guri and it was just too wet an ink for the pen, and the F nib on it was a FIREHOSE! :o  (I did much better with Edelstein Smoky Quartz and also with Noodler's Walnut -- to the point that it SAVED the Noodler's ink because Walnut is super-dry...).  Suspect that Waterman might also be pretty wet as well -- although I do really like their inks in vintage pens).  I don't have enough experience with MB inks to say one way or the other, and I think that in the case of the Robert Oster inks?  It might depend on the specific ink.

Admittedly, these days, most of my Pelikan pens get Pelikan inks just in general....

I would try the MontBlanc and Sailor inks first. I have a few different old style Pelikans and find that they prefer dry inks, the kind that make Pilot pens skip. Mine really like the au courant  chroma shading Sailor and Troublemaker inks, that are really dry.  My M800 also loves Colorverse inks.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 30 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

Parker Duofold Lady needlepoint, MB Cool Grey

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

Platinum PKB 2000, Platinum Cyclamen Pink

Waterman 52 EF, Herbin Bleu Pervenche

Hello, @Apm1.

I recommend Pilot Iroshizuku.

I also own an M600 with a monochrome 18 carat gold nib and used to use Pilot Iroshizuku Tsukiyo. If the M600 you're waiting for is the same as mine, that nib is the softest Pelikan nib in the last 40 years. During the period when this nib was used, the M600 was Pelikan's flagship fountain pen before the M800 was released, and they probably differentiated it from the M400 by using a significantly different nib. Therefore, if you apply too much pressure, the tines may separate each other or they may separate from the feed, resulting in poor or unstable ink flow. In Japan, some users have even bent the nib by continuing to write forcefully. Therefore, I recommend starting with Pilot Iroshizuku, which has good flow. If you can write without any problems with that, then you can use your favorite ink.

On the other hand, this nib is still popular, at least in Japan, because it can write a wide range of line widths. You've made a good purchase.

Left: M600 with a monochrome 18 carat gold nib M (old style), Right: M600 with a bicolor 14 carat nib M(new style). Ink is Pilot blue black, not Iroshizuku. Please note that I reground the both nibs to F.

Many  thanks. I finally got the pen. I have been very lucky. What I have in my hands a NOS Pelikan M600 old style in black with a fine 18C-750 monotone nib (1985-1988) with a good amount of flex!

At my next pen rotation I will definetely try it with Pilot ink.

Thanks

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
