Sailor Manyo Ukikusa

Ink Review # 223

---

🧾 Description

Many thanks @Lithium466 for the sample.

A bright green by Sailor. Ink has below average lubrication. Has some shading. No water resistance and not suitable for copy paper.

As I’m not a fan of bright greens, I wouldn’t say anymore. :D

Holy neon chroma, Batman!

I like bright yellow-leaning greens, like Robert Oster Green Lime or Caran d'Ache Delicate Green.  But I don't like them when they lean too far blue / minty.

Thought-provoking quotes.

I adore the extreme shading in this one. :D  I'm unsure about the color itself. Might be too yellow. Might be too bright.

Whoa! Holy toxic water-test results. Yeah, that doesn't really look like a great set of colors for a wash...

But I love hidden kitty and mousey (especially how kitty's hair blends in with the grass (rice shoots? leaves? whatever it's called)) and "Glide"! Wonderful compositions, both. :)

Thanks for another thorough review and such wonderful drawings, @yazeh!

Thanks! I ask AI to find, translate ink appropriate quotes. :D

When I am not aligned with a colour, I don't care about it's other attributes. :)

I tried to recreate that on wateroclour paper. No dice. :(

Thanks. I searched for photos of floating weeds, (ukikusa) and then composed the sketch. I did another one that didn't work well. It was too in your face. I then put the watercolour paper, to wash the holy batman feel, still I'm not sure.  I doubt if I can recoup it. ;)

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly:

Good:  Cool color, cooler chroma, wonderful artwork.

The Bad:  Insufficient lubrication.

The Ugly:  Hardly anything other than its behavior on paper. 😸

@yazeh, I enjoy these reviews, even if I reject the ink itself!  💖

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I'm sure a nice wet pen with a wide soft nib will remedy the situation.

It works well on good paper. For drawing though, its harsh.

Thanks @Sailor Kenshin. 🙏 There are colors which I connect to and there are those I don't. This was one of them. @namrehsnoom did a more nuanced review of this one maybe. I just finished  reviewing Sailor Sasabune. Much better ink and more aligned with me. :)

@yazeh -- Interesting color and seems to have nice shading.  But I'm a bit concerned about the lack of water resistance.  So this one is a "maybe -- but maybe not" for me (I probably have fewer green inks than almost any other color, because I'm very fussy about green in general).

Thanks, though, for the comprehensive review and (of course) the fun artwork!

It's a very bright green. I prefer Sasabune it has more water resistance and is deeper.

Thank you for your review :)

Having only used EF nibs, I had classified that ink as "murky green" in my book, funny how it seems everybody else considers it a bright green. Same thing for Sasabune actually! Well at least Ukikusa is easy to clean.

Loved cat & mouse impermanence!

Great review, but... I'm definitely a fan of Tokiwa-matsu and R&K Emma.

Will work for pens...

That's how nibs transform color.  ;)

I prefer Sasabune. It's an outstanding ink compared to this one. :)

Here is another drawing I did with Ukikusa:

Bird Watching!

Jacques Herbin Gris Galet, Pelikan Edelstein Apricot Achat, Sailor Manyo Ukikusa, Uniball Signo White Gel, Talens Mixed Media Notebook.

Note: I'll be posting a review of Gris Galet in a few weeks. I managed to go that dark with it by using a pen fitted with a extra wet ebonite feed and flex nib. ;)

Something I've noticed for a long time in the ink industry.

Poor bottle to bottle and/or batch to batch color consistency.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?
    • szlovak
Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
