Vintage Sheaffer Made in Australia

Hi all, it has been a long time since I've posted here.
I guess over the last few years I've just been busy with work & had been more of a practcal fountain pen user rather than a collector or enthusiast 😅

I am based in Australia and when visiting a rural town (Wangaratta) found this old Sheaffer at an antique shop.
It appears to be new old stock and never inked (though the gold surface of the nib somehow looks a bit tarnished?).

The nib has "14K Aust" and on the pen barrel is "Made in Australia", which surprised me because I didn't know Sheaffer manufactured fountain pens in Australia once upon a time.

I'd gather this is the "Touchdown" filling system.

Other than that I don't know much about Sheaffers.
But I'm sure there are people here who could identify what model this is and share a bit about its history.
So if you could help with some info it would be highly appreciated :)

Hi,

your pen appears to be a Sheaffer 'Imperial IV' in Black, with Gold Trim:

https://www.sheaffertarga.com/Imperial and Triumph/1350TD-ImpIV Black GT.html

(There are links on that page to larger pictures.)

That website (which is run/owned by a British fan) has a full reference list for all the Imperial/Triumph models, at:
https://www.sheaffertarga.com/Imperial and Triumph/Imp Triumph Ref List.html

For a model history that gives some indication of what era your pen dates to, your could read:
https://www.sheaffertarga.com/Imperial and Triumph/Imperial Write Up.html

As for Australian manufacture, I know that Sheaffer did have a factory in Australia for a good long while - which they did in order to bypass high Aussie import taxes.
I remember reading somewhere that most parts were manufactured in the USA, but then shipped over to Australia for final assembly and 'finishing' - enough work to make the pens qualify as being 'Made in Australia'.

That said, the imprints on the nibs suggest to me that the nibs must have been made Down Under too.

I have seen e.g. Sterling Silver Imperials for sale with 'Made in Australia' markings on their bodies & nibs.

More information about Sheaffer in Australia can be found in this ↓ old thread:

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
