Wality 64T and 69TS, RIP - substitutes?

Hello everyone,

I have been a fan of Wality pens for a long time, and was quite sad to hear, after a bit of a hiatus from FPN, that the company was no longer operating. I was particularly fond of some of the mid-size Wality pens, particularly the 64T, which I modified with some nib and feed substitutions. I prefer the smaller girths of these pens to the big 69T and the many oversize pens which seem to be more popular among Indian brands. I also love how sturdy the Wality pens are - unlike say the Sheaffer school pens, or many other eyedropper conversions, there is very little risk of the barrel accidentally breaking on a 64T unless you ran over it with a truck.

Alas, they are no longer sold, dashing my plans for a few experiments.

What are the best alternatives to these Wality transparent-barrel pens? I know there are several clear-barrel pens by Ranga, but they appear to all be in jumbo-sizes. I've experimented with Sailor, Pilot and other clear-barreled cart-fillers, but none are as solid as the Wality. What about the Kanwrite Desire? Is there a clear, mid-sized Ranga? (Does anyone have a few spare Wality 64T or 69TS they would part with?)

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

Hard to find substitutes for those models. Here, in Indian pen groups, it seems the Wality 69T and 71JT are most popular and as such few penmakers offer something similar.

You can check Oliver 69T, Gama Kalaignar. PLP pens also made a 71JT-inspired pen but it's not officially launched yet. Mohi pens recently launched Moonrise model which is slightly bigger than 71JT IIRC, but seems very well-made. Click pens also has some similar models as Wality.

You can search for these models or perhaps other pens from these penmakers, and hopefully you'll find something similar 👍

Also, eBay seems to have various Wality models at times, so you can perhaps even find the original ones, though likely at inflated prices.

I live in the USA. I'm seeing fewer and fewer items related to Indian fountain pens being advertised for sale on eBay. This downward trend began a couple of years ago. Not sure why.

Nice to hear from you. Alas the company is now closed. The Airmail 444 and the Wality 64T are identical and both are very similar to the 69TS. You might still be able to find the 444 and if you cannot, pls feel free to PM or email me at the address in my signature and I will be glad to send one across, if the postal department is still accepting packages to the USA.

BTW I am really curious to hear what experiments you have planned? I have had great success friction fitting the Schmidt nib and feed to these pens.

Best

The Mohi Tanishq demonstrator might be a good alternative. very robust in construction and pocket sized.

Hi Hari,

Thanks so much for the reply! The primary experiment is a repeat of my Sheaffer Triumph nib experiment (which I posted here a long time ago). The first try works great, but I did it all with hand-files so it looks rough. I want to give it another shot with better lathe work.

But I would also love to modify one of these to fit a Bock or Jinhao nib unit, if the section is large enough.

BTW my 69T currently has a Sonnet feed and a 14K Webster 4-Star nib from the 1950s, with a fine stub. So much fun to modify these!

the sections are too small to accomodate these units in a threaded in configuration. But the section can be bored out for a friction fit with the nib and feed from a bock 180 for example.

the sonnet feed is exactly 1/4 inch in dia and a perfect friction fit in the 69T section.

I love your Sheaffer triumph nib mod. I must try it on a Wality. I have tried it on a Deccan pen however.

I think its not Mohi Tanishq. The cylindrical body and a straight cap suggests Mohi Harmony. Also, the demonstrator is not their default model; its not available in their website. Perhaps a custom or special order.

It is simply referred as the demonstrator by them now... It was released at the pune pen show 2 years ago, and called the tanishq demosntrator then... It is also available on helloaugust:

the Tanishq demo is abn excellent VFM purchase. The Moonrise, OTOH. is relatively expensive but appears to be well finished and larger. I prefer the older generation Mohi nibs made by their OEM so the Tanishq demo is my recommendation at this point.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
