Junlai (Wing Sung) No. 9 gold nibs

I've just gotten a Junlai 930 pen with a fine nib and am interested in the #9 gold nibs for this pen that are offered on AliExpress by QK Stationery Store. First of all, they are very expensive, $500-600 US, and I'm a little reluctant to order something that costly from a vendor on AliExpress that is unknown to me and that has less than stellar ratings.

The variety of 18k #9 nibs on offer is interesting. You can get "standard" nibs in F, M, and B with decoration that resembles a MB 149 nib. You also can have a "heartbeat" nib that is smooth except that the slit is in the shape of a stylized EKG tracing. Both types have heart-shaped "breather" holes. In addition, both of these types are available in either regular or "JF" designations. As best I can tell, the regular tipping is a bit wider than the JF tipping. I'm particularly interested in the JF Fine, since it's quite narrow and has a bit of "architect" character, at least it appears so in the photograph.

Does anyone have any experience with these nibs or with this vendor? Admittedly, buying a 930 and installing one of these nibs brings the cost close to that of a new MB 146, but the pen is huge, if you like that sort of thing, and it appears to be impeccably built.

$600 is insane money for a nib. I paid significantly less than that for my Junlai 900 Ebonite with No.9 18kt gold nib.
I also bought a couple of No.8 18kt heartbeat nibs (for $120 each) to upgrade my two JL630s. But spending ~$300 (that's what they went for not so long ago) to do the same for my JL930 was a hard pass for me.
Don't do it.

$600 is nearly twice the market rate... I think They’re profiteering by overcharging you and then sourcing the nib from Junlei.

Junlai doesn't deal with overseas orders directly.

Talk to all the Junlai sellers on whichever app, make inquiries, pick the best deal from one of them.

$400 max, is something I will feel comfortable with.

PS 930 is HUGE!

#9 18K nails??  18x better than the steel version??  Who's gonna take one for the team?

Add lightness and simplicate.

The only seller I have been able to find is AliExpress. Can you suggest others? My only interest is in the JF Fine, which is narrower than the steel regular Fine that came with my 930.

SKD, I'm seeing the nib for $368 on AliExpress. Do you know about the "JF" variant? Is it worth the extra expense?

I just found this on AliExpress:
$575.12 | WingSung Large N0.9 18K Gold Nib Standard Heartbeat JF F/M/B Nib Grip Section for WingSung 930 Fountain Pen Accessories Gift

The price has gotten even higher.

Their quality is a myth -- I bought 6 various 600 models, only the first one I bought can write without any modification. The rest 5 have this or that issues. Later on I bought steel models and reuse their feeders for parts harvest.

Those pens are basically trash,  do not deserve my money and time.

FYI typically the price stated in those links are 20-30% inflated over the price you see when you click through. I assume the sales strategy is that you’ll be so overwhelmed by the lower price, you will buy immediately!

I decided to try the 18k nib. It's not much different than the steel but I am glad I have it. Should still hold up for a few decades. It's in my burgundy flat top now but will end up in my raden/lacquer variant that I commissioned from 365days Stationery (I expect it some time in December). I did the architect grind myself.

Splendid! I don’t think you will regret it!

What nib size did you start with? Broad?

I do think a special nib like this requires a special grind, it’s only appropriate.

It’s funny, my #8 18K nib started in my burgundy cigar 630, then when I got my black flattop raden from 365, I moved it to that pen. Perfect match!

Congrats and enjoy!

I would highly recommand Medium or BB-ungrinded to anyone who consider buying a JunL Broad nib.
To my personal experience (had bought Broad for 600 and 630 gold nib, 930 steel nib), JunL does not have a good idea of how to make Broad nibs. The baby's buttom is so huge that it won't write well on any paper unless, say, even you write very hard. This already makes Broad nib JunLs not ideal for overseas customers. And to make things worse, upon return for skipping issue, JunL don't remove the baby's buttom unless you give them direct request to do so. The default treatment would be cleaning (useless) and maybe widen the slit (worsening).
It is beyond me why a brand that makes nibs in-house can deliver such unsatifying product and service.

Thank you very much! I'm super excited! I started with a broad because I wanted the widest cross stroke possible.

The folks at 365DS recently shared a video of the competed sanding process. It looks like their work is very precise.

Weird. My junlai 930 bold nib, on a titanium body, is fully baby smooth and works well even with slightest touch to paper.

Thank you! I think my next "Grail" will be a white 360 with the ray treatment (straight strips of mother of pearl)!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
