Sheaffer Imperial IV and VIII - differences?

Good day ya'll.

On this very interesting website there is a description of the various Imperial models

https://www.penhero.com/PenGallery/Sheaffer/SheafferImperialsEarly.htm

I have an Imperial III, a IV / VIII whether I fit the gold cap or not.

So the only difference between a IV and VIII is the gold cap? From the above mentioned website it seems so.

Am I missing something?

Thank you

Basically, yes.

The Roman numerals used to distinguish the different generations of specific pen lines are, in fact, a practical shorthand inspired by the naming convention applied to the various generations of the Sheaffer PFM. While Sheaffer itself used this system, it did so only loosely; collectors, on the other hand, have adopted it more rigorously to quickly identify successive Imperial variants over the years. However, when precise distinction between variants was necessary, Sheaffer relied on specific model numbers, not those Roman numerals.

For example, the black model commonly referred to as the “Imperial IV Black” is actually catalogued as AS17-11, while the “Imperial VIII Black” corresponds to AS17G-11, with the extra “G” indicating a gold cap.

In most cases, only a single feature—such as the cap—was changed from one version to another, often between official releases, either to boost sales or to simplify production and improve profitability. Notably, these variations were not always explicitly named or systematically listed in official catalogs and repair manuals, which partly explains the adoption of this collector-driven nomenclature.

If you consult this list of Imperial variants referenced, you’ll notice that many of them are missing reference numbers. This illustrates how Sheaffer’s official documentation was often incomplete or inconsistent regarding specific model numbers for each variant. Such gaps in the official records further explain why collectors have relied on their own nomenclature and classification systems to identify and differentiate these pens.

@VillersCotterets thank you so much for the explanation. So I have a Sheaffer 'duofold, IV or VIII' just by changing caps :-)

Yes, but you should check the cap to make sure it is a cap for Imperial VIII, sometime the caps are from Imperial 727, 777 or 797...

@boiling, u r correct. The cap I have is not the right one as the clip is shorter. It doesn't have the 5 grooves as specified on 'penhero' but it is in perfect conditions compared to the one the pen came with, no clip, full of dents. It was an estate sale.

Not planning on selling the pen. I like the nib and feel in the hand very much.
