NOS Wing Sung 106

Collecting vintage Chinese pens from across the Pacific and without being able to read Chinese has been for me a case of finding interesting pens that raise far more questions than I’ll ever have answers. Nevertheless, I’ve persisted and recently I found several colorways of a NOS Wing Sung pen with a strong resemblance to the Hero 800 and thus ultimately to the Parker 45, a pen I admire.

The Hero 800 came about as a collaboration between Hero and Parker, as I understand it. No pens resulted from their short partnership, but Parker left the machining etc. behind and Hero produced the 800, so closely modeled on the Parker 45 that the parts are interchangeable. The Hero’s nib is 12K—Parker made 45 nibs in 10K, 12K, 14K, steel and their proprietary alloy, octanium. The 800 came in multiple colorways. I’ve seen black, stainless steel in two trims, and gold-plated. It’s very likely there were additional colorways, as I think the 800 was in production for as long as 20 years.  Hero went on to make other 8XX pens with 45-style nibs, some of which are very different than the base model 800. The Hero 156 is very close to the 800, with different trim. Many Hero pens over time featured nibs that looked like the 800, but few if any were the actual original nib and feed assembly.

The Wing Sung 106 is clearly derived or influenced by the Hero 800. It is slightly slimmer and a few centimeters longer, with longer cap and barrel finials and a modified arrow clip. The clip shows both the styled ‘W’ logo and the current ‘target’ logo, suggesting it could be dated to whenever that transition happened. I thought the clip looked fragile, but it has great elasticity and snaps back just as well as the 800. Like the 800, the 106’s smaller squeeze filler is built-in to the section. It does have a breather tube so it fills well.

What really caught my interest was the 106’s nib. Uncap the pen and you see a 45-style nib in a section just like the H800 or P45. But it isn’t at all, rotate the pen 180° and it’s plainly one of the ubiquitous P51 style nibs so widespread in China (let’s pause to note the Chinese never abandoned the hooded nib). Whatever is inside the section, it isn’t a 45 nib unit.

I inked the gold-plated 106 seen in the last photo and it wrote very nicely, although—this isn’t a complaint!—it was so smooth it kind of skated all over the page before I got control of it! An interesting little pen from the past. large.IMG_1435.jpeg.d37e7eec88b99ec7b97c8fc40339a102.jpeglarge.IMG_1438.jpeg.8d45ce0895f5fdd4d65985985f36be53.jpeglarge.IMG_1440.jpeg.eabe9dcc243e317a9dd5bcd4a1dbf19e.jpeglarge.IMG_1442.jpeg.d177994e59754f65511dfabc2190a7bd.jpeglarge.IMG_1441.jpeg.aa9e0b9e50c71bf755024b80355aa12d.jpeglarge.IMG_1444.jpeg.7e60c333f1bf8b559da8c41cfb0b8aac.jpeglarge.IMG_1446.jpeg.6c69d5404d11b94e1818e0e2da20a339.jpeg

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
