TWSBI Fine or Medium?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I want to go purchase a TWSBI Vac Mini, but I can’t decide whether if I go with the Fine or Medium.

I definitely want a smoother and wetter writing experience, but from the reviews I’ve seen, both nibs have a smooth writing experience and quite wet. I also heard that the medium is might be too thick for an average writer. Is that the case? Please let me know, thanks.

You can always get a new nib. I use fine, medium, and 1.1 stub nibs from TWSBI. They are made by Jowo so you can sort of guess at the writing experience. It will be smooth for whatever nib class you buy. The fine will be smooth for a fine nib, and etc. The medium will be the smoothest and wettest. If it is too wet you can have it adjusted. Personally, I, and many others, like their medium nibs, though I also have their fine nibs. It just depends. TWSBI fine nibs are like Japanese medium nibs in line width, if that helps.

Since you have experience with the medium nib, do you think that it would be too fat and thick for average writers?

I have average sized writing, slightly on the smaller size of average, I think. I like the medium nib. My preferred TWSBI nib is a 1.1 stub, if that tells you anything. If you are afraid of the medium, get the fine. It is like a Japanese medium.

Alrighty then, thanks for helping me choose :)

BTW, is there something similar to New Pen Day here? I would definitely like to post about my pen once I get it.

This isn't Badger and Blade Forum. This is the closest I know of.

I have already posted this twice. Something is wrong with the forum. Maybe you will get this one.

When I get a chance, I will write something with a TWSBI medium and fine, and then with a Pilot medium to give you and idea of sizes.

Not much of a difference between the TWSBI Fine and Medium here… I actually looked at an article comparing different brand’s nib tip surface area, and the TWSBI Fine and Medium are only 0.1 mm different.

Also, I bought the pen from a brick and mortar store yesterday, and I had the chance to compare the fine and medium myself. The medium is definitely more smoother than the fine, even if their sizes are 0.1 mm different.

Do you think that the medium is too thick though? I bought a maruman mnenosyne 7mm line notebook for writing, and it feels kind of cramped (maybe because I have bigger handwriting).

I used wider lined books. I prefer the medium for most writing, but that's me. You can see above that I have no issues writing with the medium. I think you made a good choice in pens and nibs. If you don't like the nib swap it out, perhaps. It depends on your dealer to have a nib, I think.

Not to worry. You are going to like the pen and nib. You will adjust.

Alright :)

Also here’s a sample of my writing since you provided yours, out of respect and to end our little discussion.
