I love these comments, thanks @fpupulin and @NoType and @Barry Gabay

The pen has arrived and is really something to behold. The most striking thing is that @Uncial speculation about the ring seems spot on. It posts perfectly on top of the ring without touching the barrel of the pen. An extraordinary bit of simple ingenuity. Certainly part of the original design - there's no evidence of it being a later addition. Some photos below...

My pleasure, @AcLondon.  Neither of my pens seems to feature any variations from the catalogue, and each says “Montblanc 18K.”  I only have one to hand at the moment, as the other is in a safe deposit box, so unfortunately I am unable to photograph both together.

Although each pen had been acquired from a different source over a period of time separated by several years, the ensconced example is essentially a twin of the one photographed here.

ETA: (a previous) photo of the now ensconced pen; the only notable difference between it and its (later acquired) twin is the discolouration of the gold on the cap.

First, @AcLondon, your pen is really handome!

But, wow!  @Uncial deserves some sort of prize for this spot-on supposition for the purpose of the barrel’s trim ring.  Amazing for @Uncial to have thought of it, and a pretty neat solution for avoiding posting scratches.  Since these pens were handmade by select goldsmiths through special order, before Montblanc’s Atelier began producing them, perhaps a forward-thinking customer had specified the trim ring, in an example of “convergent thinking?”

In any event, this is the first 149G I have seen with the “posting ring” or whatever you, @AcLondon, choose to call it.

@ak47 The Semiramis pens arrived back when I was still using EF and F exclusively, but before I could get around to changing their M nibs to EF or F, I was seduced to the “Broad Side” and started doing B and BB nib exchanges.  So both Semiramis pens still have the same M nibs with which they arrived.  That drawer photo being a few years old, the newest model visible is the 2020 Calligraphy Solitaire Gold Leaf Flex Nib, while the two pens on the far left are 2014 90 Yrs MST 163 (l) & 145 (r, with F nib) rather than Around the World in 80 Days II models.  (But my recent acquisitions, including Around the World in 80 Days models, have all been nib-exchanged from F and M to mostly BB and a couple of B.)

Super! B nib is a joy. I agree.

@ak47 Indeed!  Some of the broad nibs by Montblanc have had quite stubbish characteristics, which I enjoy.

I am so grateful to @Ghost Plane for introducing me to the “Broad Side,” and to @Tom Kellie and other members whose contributions have been extremely educational.  One of the many reasons I turn again and again to this forum.

I was reminded of the pen used by James Bond ( filled with acid ) to melt cell bars in movie octopussy(1983) googled to find this .spacer.png

here is a link for complete article.

great pen … enjoy in good health.

@vikrmbedi I had not realised that one of Q’s brilliant inventions involved a Montblanc fountain pen, much less the iconic 149 in Solitaire guise, so your post and link to the complete article made for fascinating reading indeed.

I love this, thanks so much for sharing it! Now need to go back and watch Octopussy. Watched it dozens of times as a kid but didn't have the same radar for a pen then...
