Old yellow legal pad, what inks?

Bo Bo Olson

Recommended Posts

I found a 30-40 year old yellow legal pad. I knew they were good papers when I 'acquired' them, back when I was just a pure Ball Point Barbarian. Now I know that many now consider yellow legal pads from that era very good papers.

Which inks should I use on this yellow paper?

I tend to have more shading inks than saturated/supersaturated inks...which I have a few only.

On a yellow paper I would be minded to use inks whose colours do not ‘clash’ with, or get ‘overwhelmed by’ the yellow of the paper’s ‘base-tint’.

That said, I don’t have any yellow paper (other than post-it notes), so these are only my own aesthetic preferences; other people might have entirely-different preferences!

On yellow paper I would be minded to use black inks, or brown inks;
perhaps some greens;
perhaps some dark blues or blue-blacks (e.g. 4001 Blue-Black from the ‘wet’ feed of a 1950s Pelikan 400/N/NN might work really well);

Reds or purples with heavy dye-loads (or e.g. Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa from a ‘wet’ pen) may work well too 🙂

But I would avoid ‘wishy-washy’ pale colours, especially any that also shade heavily - e.g. most ‘washable blues’.

Turquoise inks might work beautifully, but they might be ‘overwhelmed’ by the yellow of the paper, and their overall ‘look’ may turn out up seeming to be an unpleasantly-sickly pale green 🤷‍♂️

I suspect that any ink that shades drastically might not be a very good candidate for use on yellow paper, because I suspect that the yellow of the paper might ‘overwhelm’ the colour of the ink.

Once again, I think that the best advice that I can offer is that, if you are thinking of trying out ink ‘x’ on your old legal pads, you should to see if there was a review of it by Sandy1.
One of the great things about her ink reviews was that she would discuss an ink’s suitability/unsuitability for use on tinted papers, such as legal pads.

Good luck

I like turquoise and green on yellow paper, oh- and purple. Black looks nice, but can look greenish. Red can look nice, but can also look brown.

@Bo Bo Olson -- I'm thinking maybe a drier ink and possibly also a pen with a fine (or maybe even an extra fine) nib to possibly prevent spread and bleedthrough).  But of course i know you like inks that shade....

I love dark purple inks on my vivid yellow notebook that I made from some paper sent me by @fountainpagan quite a few years ago now... It works even better than black or blue-black. But the ones I have hardly shade...

I'm bound to have purple shading inks.

...................................

I'll wait and perhaps, I've already pens so inked.

Of my over 30 inked pens...five were empty enough to be called empty...:notworthy1:

Ajisai, a blue dusty purple turned out ok on this yellow paper. Diamine Arctic Blue...a glitter shading ink....and Diamine Ancient Copper did enough to  stand out. DA Purpur-violet did enough that I pulled out DA purple to ink in one of the five pens that just arrived in the to clean cup.

Those purples are not shading purples....

My 4 old CdA inks sit forgotten in the back of an ink drawer....and the bottles make 30ml looks real small, so when one runs out...that' it...so it sits, and locked up, at least I don't have to dust the bottles.

The old discontinued Caran dAche Storm might be a shading purple...(the mostly square fancy glass shows one just how small 30ml of ink really is.) The new stuff from CdA, like Graf von Castel, are way out of my price range.

Seeing how I'm headed down the purple road, which ES ink is purplish?

Could try , Amethyst, even to my '50's crayon box's purple... not wiki, looks more towards violet...which is reddish....not blueish..purple.

Are there any purple ES ink?

I don't know what happened, but I have only four purples...once a long time ago I had 8, before I made the mistake of buying the discontinued 4001 brilliant green that led me to buying 19 green-greenish inks with in a year.

I was chasing purples until that event.

Now have 23 green-greenish inks.

I was writing on the yellow pad and 5 of my pens were empty enough to be hard starting, so ended up in the to clean cup....and I'm going to be strong willed, and not ink those four purple inks...until I am back to 17 pens inked....so only got to write 9 pens empty.

Once for more than a half a year I was down to 7 pens inked so I could use up more ink....:wallbash:

No will power, as soon as I get a new ink, I got to ink a pen.

Sorry, just waking up , but I don’t know what ES means in this context?

For a nice inexpensive purple shader, try Diamine Lavender.

For a dusky ink of the ‘purple’ tribe that shades, I also recommend Diamine ‘Amazing Amethyst’.

It varies tremendously across different papers so, before you buy it, you would need to read through a few reviews, and have a look at the images that other members have added to the OPs.

Something I picked up on last week, ES=EdelStein ink.

Mercian....thanks very much for the links.

......

Inks that I have besides cartridges of ES amethyst,

Diamine Majestic Purple, ink I have inked.

CdA Storm...the old discontinued ink.

DA purple, and  Pur Purviolett

MB lavender-purple.

Some ancient hyroglific curse is preventing me from cleaning out the 'new' half filled dirty pen cup.....

Tomorrow will bring the continued blind spot.

Ah!

In that case, I heartily endorse the discovery that namrehsnoom shared in the following thread:

Amazing, having that much of the inks and the patience to do that.

I'd never thought a purple would come out.

Ruby Star was one of the ES inks I did not buy....and I like Topas too much as is, to adulterate it................A painter  has natural shades and tones stored up in his/her head from his palate; so that is natural.

I tried a couple drops of this or that as recommended but MB Orange didn't dazzle with the attempts of make it more lively.

Changed my mind about dumping that small Pelikan MB orange mix, it is darker and shades. But have moved that pen into my Pelikan double ink pen stand.

Back of picture..is the Pelikan pen holder set.

The inkwell set is off at a stone cutters shop for a small black marble lifter in the middle of the gray top curved side...in we tried it with metal in the two holes, but didn't look good, nor work well.

8q9CSQi.jpg

I don't have better pictures of the pen holder set, Ink wells were still more the main picture.

Next time I get around to twisting my wife's arm to make a picture of it with her handy, I will. I don't need a handy, to make two pictures a month. If you want to get hold of me, you can write a letter, and tell me when you will be telephoning.Or drop by for a cold beer and a bit from my bar. 35vrTlP.jpg

I'm too cheap to be new fashioned.

Ink mixing doesn’t require much ink, just enough to fill your pen (or even less, if you’re like me and like to change inks frequently) I sometimes just use ratios in terms of drops, if I haven’t tried that recipe before. I did that recently with some of the Penman recipes here. When I liked the color, I added a little more to write a few pages.  I stick to mixing only inks from the same maker, and usually in the same series, and no IG.
Thanks for clarifying what you mean by ES ink,  now that coffee is working I can see the connection.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
