Hello from Texas

Flatiron

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone. I’m a long time fountain pen user (Parker Vector, mostly) and more recent collector. I prefer vintage and am in the process of figuring out which pens I might like to get next — I like beautiful things, and I like well-made things, so there is lots to choose from. As far as ink, I like Waterman and sometimes Parker. Blue-black has been my preferred color since 7th grade.

When I was a university student, I was advised by a much older friend (coincidently also a pen collector) not to use a pencil for my engineering or math work, because “using ink trains your brain not to make mistakes.” Consequently, I haven’t used a pencil for years. I plan to do more personal writing in 2024 so that I’m using my pens for something other than professional work.

I’m more of a forum reader than commenter, but I’m sure I’ll have a question before long.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Welcome to FPN from a fellow Texan. Where in Texas are you?

You will find many nice folks and a lot of information here, so ask if you have any questions.

Thank you. I'm currently in Austin.

As an Aggie, I have a hard time counting that as part of the state, but welcome to FPN!

Some of us could say that about College Station. 😁

There is an active Pen Club in Austin. If you search for it here you probably can find it. We also have a great pen show in Dallas every September that is great fun.

Thanks, it's good to know about the Pen Club. I may have to come to Dallas for the pen club this year. I've been looking for a reason to take the Amtrak to Dallas for a weekend.

I lived in the Brazos Valley for a while, but the universe wanted me in Austin.

Well, to each his own.  It's not for me, but glad that it sounds like it's working out for you.

Aloha @Flatiron (great name, I love the NYC bldg). I've only been to TX a few times, but wanted to suggest a very kind seller of vintage pens in Dallas is Bill's Pens. He's online sales only, but maybe could meet if you were in Dallas on a weekend. Email him as he has another professional life, but he does repair work on vintage pens and seems knowledgeable and a gentleman.

Enjoy a Shiner Boch for me if you like beer. Fine thing to come from Texas, along with the late Molly Ivins. I miss reading or hearing her humor and insight.

Thanks for the seller recommendation, @Prof Drew. I've always been a fan of the NY building too. I'll be sure to have a Shiner for you when I have the chance. I don't remember Molly Ivins much, but I do miss my favorite newspaper columnist, Mike Royko.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
