what exactly is fountain pen day?

i've never heard of this fountain pen day before. are online vendors and b&m shops celebrating the day by having sales and specials? do pen manufacturers celebrate by offering a special pen and/or ink to mark the day? it's this friday, no? i thought i saw an email from goulet pen talking it up. i'm just wondering is all, could be worth a closer look so as to expand my ink selection which right now besides my new to me bottle of blood orange, is rich and top heavy with blacks and blues. i have always been pretty predictable.

I'm hoping Cult Pens has a sale. Their Diamine 30 mL bottles are already very well priced so I wanna get a bunch of them.

Fountain Pen Day is November 4, the anniversary of the day the US Patent was granted for the Waterman pen in 1884. It is celebrated in the community on the first Friday of November.

It was started a few years ago.  The first year one guy's website had IIRC some sort of handwriting contest, where people could log on and vote for their favorite, and the winning entries got stuff like gift certificates for pens and inks from various vendors.

These days, a lot of vendors (especially with an online presence) will have sales.

ho-hold on.  If the FPD is November 4, why is the community celebrating on the first Friday of November?  and if the community celebrated it on the first Friday of November, why is FPD on November 4?

Fountain Pen Day started in 2012. It has grown over the years, with more participants and sponsors every year. It has given us coupon codes too. It’s for the celebration of fountain pens. You don’t even have to buy one. Just write with one to celebrate the day.

I use FPD as both celebration and preparation. I write with my pens, swatch inks, color, journal at the end of the day- but I use it as my Black Friday for this particular hobby. It all goes under the tree unless I need it right away. I use AliExpress’ 1111 day as a holiday shopping day as well for stocking stuffers.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 31 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

MontBlanc for BMW IM, MB Green with SC-15

Wahl-Eversharp Bantam F, FC Lapis Lazuli

Fountain pen day is an excuse for us to buy yet another pen we don't really need, and tell everyone how we got this wonderful pen so much cheaper because we waited till FPD to buy it.

That sums it up exactly.  And now, on to the Onoto website....

Exactly as @Karmachanic said.

For FP Day itself, I got five pens repaired at the Ohio Show (various makes/models by various repairs folks), and traded a recent-ish purchase which turned out to be a frankenpen parts pen for a Cross Adventura (honestly, I was happy to just have the junker off my hands: someone had apparently tried to "fix" a Sheaffer Snorkel by attempting to turn it into a c/c pen(!) -- but at least I didn't pay a lot for it to start with.... Then got two more repaired earlier today.  But now taking some "quiet time" in my hotel room because I'm pretty exhausted and had a really late lunch, and wanted to get my hair washed before going down to the dessert party (which is in a little under 2 hours at this point, I think).

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
