Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Jinhao Black

This is review #250 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This cartridge was gifted to me by a generous FPNer. When heavily diluted (like washing out the cartridge), it's a nice dark blue, almost blue-black. :) The "Partial" water resistance is really "minimal" or "slight".  Cleaning was easy with plain water but did require some extra flushes due to how concentrated the ink is.  The ink is black, the images look sufficiently black. :)

Errata: Reviewing while kitten is awake, counting days inked, and spelling "permanence".

Line width (The "h" in Rhodia. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 318µm. With 250 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Microscope image (100x. Lots of these feathery lines. I assume the color is just due to the glass or something - there was no red or purple hue to the ink.)

Iz Tuesday.  Yaay!

Holy cow.  A feathery swirl in a purple sea…upon which sits a teeny gnome.  Is he malevolent?  We don't yet know.  But walking skeletons: this is pure Ray Harryhausen territory and I love it.

Do I have this ink?  I can't be sure.  I do have some black ink carts and a cute little bottle of Jinhao Blue (which is nicknamed 'Jink').  But are the black carts Jinhao?  Probably.  And I've used them.  In a Jinhao pen!  They were hard-starting, to my recollection.

Thanks once again, @LizEF, for another wonderful review and story.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

This is one of the difficulties with Chinese inks in general, but also with cartridges - the branding isn't always there or isn't always clear.

Great review as usual @LizEF

I see it's water resistance is futile ;)

I love how you managed to marry the quote and the story line :)

Glad Quin sticks with the staff/orb. He's "thowing" guts as Ethrie would say 😛

Thanks more making Tuesdays memorable 🙏

Pretty much.  If you hurry, you might recover what you wrote, but you'd better be fast!

:D  Been trying to find fitting quotes - it's not always easy.

:D Like the others, Quin's loyal to his friends, whatever the risk.

Thank you @LizEF for inktroducing black inks with a special focus on interesting microscopy images!  I got the impression that's really the most useful aspect of black inks and I feel lured into buying some of them for my own microscopy experiments.... 🤪

The stealth blue aspect of this Jinhao Black can be a thing. Did you see the blue in the writing sample (under some angel of illumination and/or inspection)?

Having missed two previous episodes, I try to keep up with the story. Ou party seems to enter a classic dungeon scenario. This makes me curious - I'm looking forward to damp stone walls, mossy wet strings reaching from the invisible ceiling, prison doors opening with creaking and rusty arrowheads shooting out of hidden holes in the wall ... 🫣😱

One life!

:D You're very welcome!  And the microscopy can be fascinating, and boring - just depends on the ink.  If you try, I hope you share some of your findings!

No, I only saw the blue - and very clearly - during cleaning.  Initially, it was when I was cleaning the pipette used to fill the converter - that's why I did the chroma.  I think it might be a very nice blue-black when diluted, but I'm not sure how well the lubrication and flow would hold up to dilution...

:D :D Don't forget, there's a link to catch up on the whole story quickly.  I hope your imagination continues filling in the details - I'm afraid our format is keeping me from much of any descriptions!

Since I use broader nibs, I find that black inks with a bluer tinge to them are really nice to play with. That would make this one likely to be fun for me.

:)  It may indeed.  It is a very black black, so you might have to spread it thin or dilute it, who knows.  But it's inexpensive, so should be no problem to test.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
