Wing Sung has had a 629 model that is the size of a MB146 and not they have a 630 model the size of a MB149.  ChrisRap52 did a nice review and loved the huge nib!

I just bought one.  Vast naming confusion has ensued.

You call it

    WS 630 or

    WingSung 630.

A search for that on AliExpress found a

    Yongsheng 630 Brief Fountain Pen

matching the pics and specs, so I bought that (black, 0.5).  The box is identical to my earlier WingSung pens, some of which were also named

    Majohn.

But the pen cap band is engraved

    JUNLAI 630 MADE IN SHANGHAI

Can anyone help untangle this?  Are WingSung, Majohn, Yongsheng, and Junlai names of companies?  Or names of product lines made by these or other companies?  Or names for this pen model?

Thanks for any light shed on this.

The pen itself is a delight.

the brand name 永生 pronounced YongSheng in mandarin chinese. WingSung its an approximate pronunciation of 永生, probably one of the chinese dialect, then translated to western english as Wingsung.  The direct translation of 永生 is "Live forever", "Living forever".   君来 is pronounced Junlai in mandarin chinese, it means King's Coming, King's arrival, King's landing, something like that.  I've no clue how does Junlai has anything to do with WS.  Maybe it is a new subbrand / subline (more luxury line) by WS?

Obviously i didn't investigate the origin of the name of WS, just purely based on wording and pronunciation.

This has been my assumption as well. The 14K NMF nibs that the 630 has optionally are marked “JUNL.” However the new color (lake blue or similar) of the WS 629 also can be purchased with a (smaller) 14K JUNL long knife nib. But that cap band does read “Wing Sung 629” as you would expect.

Another observation about the 630’s cap band: the three rings are linked together on the 630 sold with the gold nib, but separate rings in the steel nib version (just like the original 629’s rings). This has been my uniform observation of eBay and AliExpress sales. The new lake blue 629 has linked rings in both the gold and steel nib versions, so no consistency there.

I really like the14K Heartbeat JUNL nibs, in both sizes. The performance of the NMF nib is very good and I especially like the way the engraving is minimized to let the gold speak for itself.

Add something not mentioned in the blog post.

According to Chinese experts and enthusiasts posting on Baidu and Zhihu, the Wing Sung as pen company ceased to exist in 1999.

After that, the brand name was taken over by Hero Industrial(上海英雄实业), but Hero Industrial is not a company that produces writing instruments, and is not related to the Hero Group's Hero Gold Pen Factory(上海英雄集团 上海英雄金笔厂 ) that we know of.

Hero Industrial rents the Wing Sung brand to several companies.

There is no longer a pen manufacturer named Wing Sung. Now Wing Sung is just a rented brand name.

Junlai is a Green Stationery production(上海格林文具) brand company under *the Wing Sung 6xx series brand rented enterprise.

*Chinese experts and enthusiasts posting on Baidu and Zhihu call it "Zhang Laoban" (张老板)but it is unclear whether it is a company or a private investor.

Several people mention the same thing in different words. I am not an expert, so please correct any incorrect information on these.

P.S.

I took a screenshot of the instruction manual that appeared in the YouTube video and translated the Chinese text using Google Lens.

On the cover of the user's manual reads;

上海英雄实业有限公司授权

上海格林文具有限公司生产

Authorized by Shanghai Hero Industrial Co., Ltd.

and produced by Shanghai Green Stationery Co.,Ltd.

And above these statements, the famous Wing Sung logo is prominently displayed.

If the product comes with an instruction manual, take a picture of it and use image-text extraction software such as Google Lens and translation software to find out what it says.

Martensitic stainless steels (which have a ferritic microstructure) are magnetic. And you’re right some others are not, like those who have big amounts of nickel. Which I think this is the case.

thank you!

The cheaper 630s all miss the choice of an EF nib. Mostly starts from F, some even from M.

One can buy a 630 with an EF gold nib for around 30000 Yen (~190 USD).

But for that price I can get a used Montblanc 146 or - if very lucky - an 149 on Yahoo Auctions.

This is so true! Jinhao’s regular #8 nib comes in EF, but not the heartbeat in #6 or #8. The #8 nib on the Hongdian N10 does not come in EF, but the #8 offered on the A9.

One compensation for this is that the reverse of the Fine heartbeat nib, in many or most cases, provides an XXF line that is smooth but dry.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
