2023 Commonwealth Pen Show Cancelled - See You in 2024!

Hello everyone,

We are writing to inform you that unfortunately the 2023 Commonwealth Pen Show on September 16 and 17 has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. Our hotel is having severe staffing issues and absolutely refuses to host our show. Due to the short amount of time it will be impossible for us to reschedule our 2023 show.

We are already working to find a new venue for September 2024.

Our regards,
Jim and Cheryl Baer

Sad news, but understandable under the circumstances.

That's really bad news, but for any of you who like to travel a bit, the Toronto Pen Show (details at Scriptusinc.com) is on the last Sunday of October.  It's a one day show, so that will leave you plenty of time to explore Toronto, go to Niagara Falls etc. etc. And your dollar goes further up here.

What a pity. The 2022 Commonwealth Pen Show was my first pen show ever and I really enjoyed it. Hoping to see everyone in 2024.

It is being worked on as we speak.

Also, we may have other (smaller) opportunities to get together and buy and sell our pens, so be sure to check back regularly at the

Boston Pen People site.

Thinking of coming to this show having been to DC three times feeling like I want to explore somewhere new.  What’s the plan for the show?

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

Hopefully it's happening next year.  But I should warn you that if you've been to DCSS you're gonna be in for a shock because Commonwealth is TINY in comparison (and I haven't been to DCSS since they moved to the new site -- but went 3 years running before that and it was pretty overwhelming, it's so huge, especially the first year I went).  The last time Commonwealth actually happened, I was -- quite frankly -- a bit surprised that they expanded it to two days -- the first year I went there were a total of 17(!) vendors, and I spent a good chunk of the first hour I was there standing in line for the special Noodler's inks made especially for the sale (and hoped that I'd be able to snag a 2nd bottle of the blue for someone here on FPN who asked me to pick up a bottle of it for him if I could).

OTOH, it's a nice little show and I always had a good time at it (although I have less of a reason to go to Massachusetts than I used to since my husband's mom died).  The last year it happened, my husband ended up coming with me (he was supposed to be getting stuff from her house out of the storage unit in order to consolidate stuff down to 1 unit after her house got sold, but it didn't work out timewise.  And he ended up buying a bottle of Noodler's Dark Matter, on the recommendation of some guy sitting at the table in the center of the room that was the freebie/swap table.  And I think he had a pretty good time just in general (he's also been with me to DCSS the last year it was at the old site, and one time to the Triangle Show, where he tolerated 1 day and then the second day stayed at the hotel we were at until the evening, when I picked him up and we grabbed dinner before going to the Saturday night dessert party and auction; come to think -- he also grimaced through the Saturday auction at DCSS that last year at the old site, too.... B)).

Sorry that Commonwealth got cancelled this year (although I understand the hotel's point of view) and have my fingers crossed for next year.

Thanks for the heads up about the orders of magnitude in difference of the two pen shows.  I have enjoyed the DCSS and not as yet visited with the new site.  However, I booked LA and had to cancel given meeting then not meeting covid vaccines and was trying to get them all...anyhow just my age complicated having to wait my turn for booster and the whole border crossing and ArriveCan fiasco...it was a mess.

There is an appeal in seeing Boston and a New England state.  Washington and Orlando have been fully explored well enough.  I think a pen show would be fun for me and not massive means no big deal heading off to explore with my wife who after 15-20 min is pretty much done with pen shows.

I need a big pen show in North Dakota or Montana so I just have to drive south.  Come on North Dakota and Montana pen peeps.....

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
