Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: De Atramentis Archive Ink


This is review #219 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:


Post-recording notes: I had a feeling this would stain (didn't want to come out of the pipette or off the walls at the bottom of the sample vial), so I put it in my Penmanship and a cartridge (one with a metal agitator ball).  Cleaning wasn't as bad as it could have been.  Nothing stained, but once the ink dries, it has to be scraped or rubbed off (e.g. from around the lip of the cartridge and off the shoulders of the nib).


It's a warm black, but from this nib, it just looks black.


According to the De Atramentis website, this ink has a lightfastness rating of 8 (the highest) and "is produced according to the requirements of ISO 12757-2".

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 283µm. With 219 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Thank you @LizEF for the ink review and for the story part.

In my imagination, I see Makhabesh breathing in, holding the air, and .... more in the next episode. 😊

 

Recently, I learned to love a certain black ink and can now follow the reasons why to use such a colourless B) ink. Nevertheless, black archival inks are not on my "must have" list, thankfully. This deAtramentis ink seems to be among the more civilised.

:D  Waterman Intense Black was rather pleasant to me - in my Laureat.  Sailor Black (regular, not Kiwaguro) had a nice velvety feel.  And yes, as a permanent black, this one is quite nice.  But none have yet convinced me to buy a bottle. :)

Crisp line, I'm a fan of blacks, but this particular one is not for me.  Scraping?  Such a frightening word when used in conjunction with fountain pens!  😜

Great review @LizEF, love where the the story line  is heading :thumbup:

This seems like a great archival ink. It has all the qualities desired: super fast dry time, warm black, despite all the the twiddling ;)  Looking forward to your future reviews.....  I had a chuckle reading Essri's last line, :D

:)  Well, it *mostly* dried fast, but little tiny bits still smudged after the 2 minute mark.  But I agree - this seems like a great archival black ink.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
