Please Help Me Understand Waterman Line Up

Recommended Posts

I'd like to learn more about Waterman's modern pens and understand the relative positioning of the various models. Pelikan makes it easy with their numerical names 200< 400< 600 etc. What is the Waterman hierarchy?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Hierarchy is relative, since an M200 is built the same, writes the same and looks almost identical to a much more expensive M600.

Now Waterman. The Allure and Emblems are entry level, Hemisphere and Expert are midrange, the Carene and Exception luxury.

However there are different finishes available for each, example a Hemisphere can have a gold nib and a Waterman Carene Deluxe is not the same visually as a normal Carene.

The German lineup of pens is very limited much like their imagination, whereas companies like Parker and Waterman made lots of innovative and diverse designs and technologies, so if you are interested in them you have some learning to do.

Up to this day I am only partially aware of all the pens Waterman ever made, both the american and French company.

Might as well ask what specific pen you are interested in getting, or what category of pens.

Thank you @rochester21 I purchased my first Waterman, a Carene, a few weeks ago and just wanted to understand their lineup.

While I am more interested in vintage, I appreciate having a better understanding of present day offerings by Waterman's.  Thank you!

From cheapest to most expensive the Waterman range is;

Allure

Embleme

Hemisphere

Expert

Carene

Exception

The Allure has never held any for me so I don't have any.

I do have a couple of emblemes bought on special at some time but was not taken enough by them to try them out.

I have a few hemispheres,  many Carene's (I tell my wife they must be replicating in the pen cabinet), and a single, lonely Exception.

The Hemisphere is an OK pen. Nothing bad about it but nothing great.

I have never used an Expert. I think I have some ballpoints and mechanical pencils somewhere.

The Carene is one of the best pens I have owned. The nibs are simply perfect, the size and weight are, for me, very comfortable. Combine that with very high manufacturing standards and beautiful finishes and you have a great modern pen. The marine amber and sea garden green are two of the most attractive laque finishes I've seen.

The poor lonely Exception I have is black with a medium nib and chrome trim. It too wrote perfectly from out of the box. Everything which I said about the carene applies to this pen also. The square shape takes a short time to adjust to but is very comfortable go write with.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
