Fountain Pen Day 2022

Misfit

Recommended Posts

Fountain Pen Day is a week from today. I made an impulsive purchase last night.  I ordered a Franklin-Christoph model 45L in a color that went away. That has made a Fountain Pen Day purchase iffy for me. Then I remembered a topic posted by @amberleadavis about fountain pens at Five Below that would seem to be a budget-minded price.  I expect I’ll shop there on Fountain Pen Day, even though the store won’t be celebrating it. I usually get a chocolate cake to celebrate FPD. I suppose I still could.

Do you have any plans for Fountain Pen Day 2022?

Tidying the disaster area that is my desk and my ‘office’ (on an enclosed balcony), I suppose. Got guests coming over on Saturday.

LCdC going out of business puts a serious dampener on my pen-buying activity, although I think AliExpress is having a sale event starting Tuesday, so I might get an Asvine P20 and perhaps a few more Jinhao 80 in different colours, if the prices are right.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Well, I'll be at the Ohio Pen Show on that day.  Whether I buy anything or confine expenses to getting pens repaired (which is actually a higher priority for me at the moment) remains to be seen....

Hi @inkstainedruth  I personally think anything you do with fountain pens on FPD counts as celebrating it. Lucky you to get to go to a pen show. I hope you post about your experience.

My FPD swag has shipped. It might get here in time for Fountain Pen Day. I think the pen I ordered will get here before next Friday as well.

There’s an official fountain pen day?! (Of course there is). Well now I’m panicking about which pen to buy as an FPD gift to myself 😁. Currently deciding between a pilot custom 74 and a platinum 3776 - although I’ll probably end up with both as they’re in my price sweet spot, so I guess it’s just a matter of which one first… maybe the one that will get here quickest, and I’ll crack it open on fountain pen day!
Fingers crossed for a funky colour…

@AndyPen I recently got a Pilot Custom 74, and have a Platinum 3776 Chartres Bleu I got used from the blogger callled Inkophile.  I think I like the nib on the 3776 better. They are both B nibs. However, it might be due to ink choice.

What colors are you looking for in each? I got the orange 74 from zafpens.com. They are in Greece. Only ones who still had the orange 74. The red ones look nice online.

I really like the orange 74, looking for a medium (to write like a western fine apparently) and that's the only one that Big Pen don't have... The 3776 does look good in the red, but I was hoping for something a bit brighter than my black Dia2.

...Now, however, my head has been turned by the Onoto Scholar in yellow (sorry 'mandarin'), although it's more expensive again. I'm a master at upselling to myself!

I need to start bookmarking online shops, or learn how to find people who sell on from their collections - I don't really know many yet.

Well, I've just added to my shopping list for the show.  But not for happy reasons....

I was in a rush this morning to get a load of laundry started and forgot that I had clipped the Pilot Falcon to my sweatshirt and then pulled off the sweatshirt to toss in that load.  And then with about 10 minutes to go suddenly thought "OMG -- where's that pen?!"  And as the load was agitating the cap came off and the converter detached from the back of the feed and ended up in the barrel.  And of course there was still ink in the pen (Sailor Souboku -- so a pretty permanent ink at THAT.... :wallbash: Fortunately there only seemed to be ink on the towel I use for lumbar support when I'm sitting down... and NOT on stuff like my husband's good shirt.  We'll find out how well Amodex works AFTER something has been through the washer instead of pre-treating it BEFORE it goes into the washer....   But it looks as if a new converter for that pen is in my immediate future.  :(

I have the Custom 74 in fine and medium. The fine is dry and so far only works well with Iroshizuku inks. The medium is surprisingly wet and writes a much broader line than Pilot medium stainless steel nibs such as on the Metropolitan.  I like them both, but if you want a fine pen you might want to try before you buy.

No current Fountain Pen Day purchase plans, but that could change.

hmmm that's the problem, nowhere around here to try before I buy. When I investigate pens I should probably check out whether I can easily replace the nib - then if it's not what I'm hoping for I can buy one and switch (or upgrade), and keep the spare to play with occasionally. Thanks for the info on this though.

Just purchased the swag pack as well! And no other Fountain Pen day purchases on the agenda, but I did purchase the BENU Euphoria Cookies and Cream Milkshake Limited Edition pen over the weekend, so it will probably be here by then!

@inkstainedruth Wow, very lucky that the ink only got on a towel.

Don't I know it!

And since it's one of the lumbar support towels, it's less critical to get it completely de-inked, as long as the ink is dry.

Of course then last night I ended up getting Waterman Serenity Blue on the seat of my chair in the living room -- didn't realize the pen wasn't capped.  And got home from the bank and the grocery store a little while ago to discover that one of my Decimos had been in my back pocket pretty much since the bank -- including while I was in the car -- without the nib being retracted.... :headsmack:

Amazingly I don't seem to have done any actual damage to that 18K rhodium plated nib....

It's been a really bad week so far.  And it's only TUESDAY.

Oh Ruth, that really sucks. I hope your week turns around!  I bought a 2 pen leather holder and a Sheaffer that should be here around FPD.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 25 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

MontBlanc Noblesse M, KWZ Sheen Machine 2

Wahl-Eversharp Bantam F, FC Lapis Lazuli

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

Well, I'm not sure that it could get much worse....  Especially since I spent half the day before going out in dealing with various incompetent and clueless people at Apple Support....  Had to then rush to get to the bank before it closed, to deposit a dividend check we got from our insurance company.  And have to remember to log into online banking because I can't remember whether my husband got paid last week or gets paid the end of this week (and don't really want to be dealing with that in some random hotel room when I don't know how safe their wi-fi is...).

My Franklin-Christoph pen arrived today, so it can’t technically be a FPD item. I could wait to use it.

@inkstainedruth smart of you not to trust hotel Wi-Fi.

Cool!  I’m hoping mine will get here in time to wear a button on Friday.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
