Line variation with OBB nib

a student

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 149 Platinum from Istanbul airport MB boutique whilst in transit. All 149 Platinum fountain pens in that boutique were being offered at a special price that day (680 euors), but all had the same nib, that is the Medium nib. Indeed all the fountain pens in that airport boutique had medium nibs. I am contemplating a change to an OBB  (intend to request a Swiss MB boutique)

Have FPN members experienced line variation with an OBB?

Thank you

Yes, there is line variation.

As they are hand ground, exactly how much will vary somewhat pen to pen, although it's definitely more pronounced in an OBB than an OB. I will try to remember to provide a sample from a recent OBB when I get home this evening.

With that said, I'd be very tempted to go all the way for an O3B on a 149.

Thank you. A writing sample of OBB would be great. Does a O3B comes as a special order because I have not seen one at the nib sample corner in a MB boutique?

Sorry, I didn't get this done yesterday(was feeling a bit under the weather after a COVID booster) but should be able to this afternoon.

Also, I was under the impression that O3B was considered a "regular" nib for nib swap purposes.

I've been told by my local boutique O3B was moved to the bespoke line of nibs. *edit* This information appear to be incorrect. (Thanks Zdenek!)

According to MB web O3B is still available as a nib of choice for 149.

OBB nibs do have some line variation but because it's ground as an oblique nib, the variation is not as obvious as a straight BB nib. But you have to remember that all of Montblanc's double broad nibs aren't designed for best line variation, rather provide flair to your writing so that the words don't look like you've written with a fat blob of iridium.

Why am I not surprised my boutique gave me incorrect information.

Oddly the oblique section of nib sizes did not show up on my work computer. It did on my phone.

@bunnspecialThank you for that writing sample; immensely helpful

@gerigoThank you for sharing that bit of first hand experience. My current range of nibs varies from EF to B as well as the 149 Calligraphy. I thought that OBB might be a fun way to step out of that zone

@Zdenek Thank you for that link. Yes, 3OB seems to be available. To test the possibility I selected a 149 from that website as if to buy but the O3B did not come up in the nib options shown. Perhaps a separate request needs to be made. As for myself, with previous experience limited to no more than a B, I should first try out the OBB; right?

@GOTO10 It seems to me that your boutique fellow had perhaps not ventured further than the nib option drop down menu that shows up when one buys a MB fountain pen off their website. In my experience, it is not unusual for boutique personnel to be less clued up than some of the experienced buyers. Hence thank heavens for this forum
