Pen rest?

Emt1581

Recommended Posts

I'm sitting at my desk/computer for work.  A lot of times I'll need to get a drink or give attention to something else for a brief time and I don't want to re-cap the pen, but I also don't want it to roll off the desk.  It would be nice to have something to stick it in or set it on that would help prevent it from rolling.  Are there any cheap/DIY options?  Not looking to spend $50 on a rest for a $20 pen (Wing 698 demonstrator).

Thanks

A large piece of Blu-tack or plasticine between the desk surface and the pen's cap finial will probably do the trick. Just stand the pen cap with its mouth pointing to the ceiling, then drop your pen into the receptacle without screwing and re-capping the pen between uses, while you're at the desk.

Of course, since you're talking about DIY, 3D printing a suitable pen stand that doesn't include a thread in the receptacle onto which the secure the pen is probably not that difficult.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Didn't consider 3D printing.  I do have a printer so I could do that.  However, I'm thinking the barrel/threading diameter/size would need to be figured into the equation for the 3D print to work well.

Is there a specific file that is known to work well for the 698?

Thanks!

I don't see why that would be the case. I just had a look a my Wing Sung 698 (still inside the see-through plastic retail packaging that is sealed at the factory with a Wing Sung sticker). Even a long cylinder with an opening that is a teensy bit narrower than the widest part of the tapered (but uniformly round and not faceted) gripping section would hold the pen upright, and work well enough to prevent it from either rolling or drying out from a fifteen-minute break from whatever you are doing at your desk. Since you ask for cheap/DIY, I'd think that the bare minimum required to perform those functions, however tacky (think Blu-tack) or inelegant, would be considered a satisfactory solution. You could make something that is studier, more stable as a stand, or even prettier, but it doesn't sound to me that it's in your brief to make it capable of allowing the barrel to be properly screwed into the receptacle for the business end of the pen to secure it, or to make it possible to leave the pen in the stand (and not properly re-capped) overnight and not dry out or hard-start by next use.

I have some experience with 3d printing pen blocks, tho some of the 1 pen block things. I think you could try printing with a flex filament on the inside tho it is difficult to adhere flex to PLA. Dealing with flex can be a bit of a nightmare at times.

I rest my fountain pen on my computer keyboard in the gap between the function keys and number keys.  Works great and costs nothing.

You can probably print one of these with an opening and cavity to fit the gripping section of the Wing Sung 698 more snugly (without providing a hermetic seal, and without internal threading):

You can make a nice compact pen rest out of a wine bottle cork.  Simply use a file or Dremel tool to cut a U-shaped slot perpendicular across one side and you're done and dusted.

I don't think it requires anything more complicated than a block of polystyrene foam with a hole cut into it.

Just drop the pen cap into the hole, and when you need to pause and step away for a few minutes, drop the pen into the cap without screwing or snapping it on properly. The hole doesn't have to fit any particular model of pen's cap that snugly, just to be able to stand the pen up.

Chopstick rests work well, are cheap, and are readily available in numerous materials and styles. Pen/pencil trays also work and are not always expensive. I just found one online for under $5.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
