Lamy Safari Round Grip

Matt Davis

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!  Project completed today that might be of interest:  I am in the "I don't like the triangular grip of the Safari" camp.  Today I made attempt number one at fixing it.  I reduced the factory grip to be almost round (a small dimple from the triangular indentations remained), then glued a delrin cylinder using plastic epoxy, and finished with a few passes at a 0.035" feed rate on the lathe to give it some texture.  Anyway, here's the result:

Wow, great job.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Welcome to FPN.

Thanks for sharing your original ‘mod’ to the Lamy Safari. :)

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Interesting, and nice work.   You can leave your day job, and become a “sectionmeister,” modifying sections for all the people who want a round section on their Safaris.  😉

"Sectionmeister"  Haha!  I love it!

Thanks for the replies, all.

I personally love the Safari’s grip, but would like to try this version of it! You’ve done a great job!

Cheers,

Ian

Very interesting! My immediate thought on this was that I would probably evolve this modification to include a swoop and dip in the section to mimic the "effective" section diameter at the primary gripping location of the original section, rather than what looks like a larger rounder portion.

I'm finding that I appreciate a section that is matched with a barrel of larger width (which, ironically, leads me to like many pens with "steps" in them, which seems to be a less popular preference).

I have been happy with the Lamy Safari since the original pen came out ant the beginning  of the 80's and I also like the special edition colours. Maybe I'm use to the triangular section but maybe it will be a good addition to the Safari line if the company offer a round section, let say in transparent material, that can be change with the triangular one and that uses the same nibs. In case someone doesn't like the original section they can have the option of a round one and they can still enjoy a Safari pen.

That is a good idea and would make a nice option. how did you do it ?

Done with a lathe--reduce the factory section by removing material, then glue a round one over the top.  The grip could be made from just about anything. For the record, this one is delrin, and delrin is not a good material for a grip because it's naturally very slick.  As a result, I updated the profile a bit to ensure a good grip.

Well done.

Someone should re-engineer the clip next.

I dunno about that.  Yes, the clips are kinda ugly (which is why I tend to NOT want colors that have the "standard" silver-color clip and tend to go for the SE models with colored clips which look less like paperclips).  OTOH, those clips are super functional....

It took me a bit to get used to the triangular grip (someone giving me a cheap Chinese knockoff helped).  But at first, particularly for the metal-bodied al-Stars, the edges seemed to be very sharp and made the pen uncomfortable to hold when I tried one.  Now?  It doesn't bother me -- even for the al-Stars I have.

I like the idea of having a modular Lamy Safari pen. You could choose to have a round or triangular grip and different clops, between that and the colors the collectors  "all shall love ... and despair." of ever having a complete collection.

Amazing work, even if it's not for me. How does the cap fit? Any leaks or unexplained drying out?

The next logical step is to fill in the holes in the barrel and make it an eyedropper. Perhaps you or someone with skills like yours might even be able to make the holes transparent, so that you could check ink levels.

The cap fits normally with no issues as I didn't modify those dimensions.  Eyedropper.... maybe, but the section threads wouldn't seal so I'd need to modify it enough that I might as well just make a pen from scratch.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
