A comparative review of two ranga pens

This time I choose to review two similar sized pens from Ranga for better perspective. I have already reviewed the ranga splendour earlier and here it will be compared with the ranga majestic.

The ranga majestic is in regular ebonite with a Schmidt medium point and the splendour is in premium acrylic with a ranga medium nib.

Here are the two pens.

The two pens are the same size when seen in this picture. But shapes have an interesting effect on the eye. When seen without the other, the majestic looks more bigger owing to a somewhat rectangular shape compared to the torpedo of the splendour.

The majestic is made extremely well and as you can see the finials are black in color. They fit in extremely well with the rest of the body and this shows a really nice attention to details.

The bottom sections of both these pens are tapering and it's again a feature of many of the ranga pens. They also have a very different feel when felt with the hand. You can feel very minor ups and downs in the body which indicate that these are handmade pens and I really appreciate and like this feature.

The above photo shows the tapering on both the pens and the splendour's tapering looks. more pronounced.

The writing sections are again highlights of another ranga feature. They are long and very comfortable. They are not very girthy sections but sections that again taper towards the nib. The writing section of the majestic is black and that of the splendour is hour glass shaped. I find both these shapes very comfortable. 165555094780554668013305502673.thumb.jpg.0be91aebb3c33f4e3cd79ddb77d0ec5f.jpg

There is a pronouced step at the bottom of the writing section and the threads are clearly felt and this is extremely again comfortable. I love holding near the threads and owing to the long grip section the grip can be adjusted according to how these pens balance in the hand.

The cap of the majestic is certainly bigger and heavier due to it's shape. The big cap also makes this pen look more classic. It's an over sized duofold. 16555514731002539245279076311831.thumb.jpg.452ac04ad06306d3177bb5e9a0b6bb86.jpg

Both the pens have multistart threads and the pens open in 1.5 turns. Ranga again is few of the companies that makes multistart threads by hand chasing which requires extreme skill.

The materials of these pens feel a bit different. The acrylic is really attractive on the splendour and is somewhat shiny like a crystal. It's surface looks more perfect. I mean it's close to a machine made pens perfection. The ebonite on the other hand looks more classy and shows more of the surface and the patterns on the surface is less dense and one can easily tell that it's totally handmade. The ebonite feels a touch heavier and more tactile than the acrylic. I like them in their own ways. The acrylic shows also stains from inks more easily than the ebonite.

The clips on both these pens are functional and sturdy.

The pens become excessively large on posting.

The nibs of these pens are the most interesting part for me. They both are dwarfed by the size of the pens. Splendour has a ranga medium and majestic has a Schmidt medium. Both these nibs were inspected well by ranga and tested before sending which is very much appreciated. 1655552370967543460614267497385.thumb.jpg.9289f1e51e45b637332a929602975d64.jpg

They both wrote out of the box and are different in terms of the writing experience. The ranga nib is slightly more saturated than the Schmidt. The Schmidt is smoother and wider. Both are roughly the same size and the ranga nib is broader than the Schmidt at the shoulder. The wetness is comparable. I inked them both with bril Royal Blue. 16555528583084056018967645241207.thumb.jpg.0b87dc5e145864f87874b0d8d7128752.jpg

The size comparison photos are shown below.

This is with a guider zimbo. 16555529520899179253584534414369.thumb.jpg.b46bd9b1646ef3e30ee85847e7fb822e.jpg

The majestic was priced at INR 4800 and the splendour was priced similarly (INR 5500 I think. But not certain).

I really love both these pens and I own many quite a number of giant oversized pens and in this category  Ranga pens have a special place in my heart. They are unique and the designs are time tested. The pens are made with care and attention and this quality makes me come back to ranga pens again.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
